For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I haven't ever seen a dog or coyote track with out the pads present as well. It also looks like he would be missing his middle claw and or toe. I am also down in sheep country so there aren't any dogs and few coyotes if any. I have been down here for two years now and haven't ever seen or heard one yet. It resembles more of a pig track to me, but I have never seen one with such sharp hooves.

I go along with a pig track. Looks to me like normal dew claw marks but the toes may be malformed, or when ther ground was wet, as the animal pulled its foot out, the dirt/mud that was around the toes collapsed inward making the toes appear smaller. My SWAG for the day.

I'll second CHC on the mud falling into the track. As far as what made it, it might as well have been a chupa... ...since a track like that can be made by any cloven-hoof animal. Thing is - it depends on what the consistancy the mud was whether the hooves were actually "pointed".

I am hoping that it may be a Black Buck. The neighboring pasture has a trophy buck hanging out in it. He may have found his way into our pasture. They are small enough to have made that track. Maybe I will be mounting one in the near future.

SWAG #2 for the day on this one. Looking at the picture, the track was made when the ground was wet, extremely wet. The tracks made by the dew claws are quite prominent, which is something ususally seen with pig tracks. Now, not knowing the composition or wetness of the ground when this track was made, and taking into consideration the difference in shape of the toes of a pig and the dew claws, what if say the reason the toe tracks collapsed inward on themselves, or shrank, is because when the pig pulled its foot out, the consistency of the mud, created a vacuum on the hoof, so that while the dew claws pulled out cleanly, the hoof itsself made the mud pull back in on itsself when it was withdrawn. I know that is a stretch, but, Lora and I are headed for New braunfels in the morning and will end up at the coast, so I decided to take a second shot at it.

I wil agree with CH that the back part of the track is dew claws but why could it not be a buck deer of some breed? And is that the only track available?

There were a couple of other tracks but they looked like this one. I took the picture of that one because it was the most defined and well formed.

The double indentations behind the cloven hoof print point to a buck on the run.

A hog leaves those same indentations with nearly every step they take.
