yeah pretty much!


it does come in handy having to drag out a deer that has made it way back in the brush though.....
Forgot about our 200 ft winches/tow straps for when our prey goes into a thicket

This is one of the most interesting threads I've seen on here.
I'm glad everyone could weigh in on how physically fit Texas hunters are. As for me, my best workouts come from doing laps between the fridge and the sofa.
But I do have a sheep hunt coming up, so its time to buckle down.

Thats exactly what I thought. The day Im no longer able to ride my four wheeler, drive my truck, sit in an office chair in my 6 ft blind, and watch my boy gut and load the animal. Well,,,,, I will go ahead and hang it up.

As far as working out goes, I don't have time for it. Too busy working. Interesting thing, though. I have buddies that do the gym thing, and look to be in MUCH better shape than me. When it comes time to haul hay or build fence I can work most of them into the ground. There's something about actually getting out and working hard at hard work that builds an ability that can't be found in a gym.

going to Colorado elk hunting Sept 1st didn't exercise this year spur of the moment hunt normally start riding bike and exercising about 3 months ahead of time my fat butt is going to suffer this year but it will be all worth it to suck up some fresh air and cool weather love camping on the mtn.

Working the dog and scouting in the kayak has been helping me. Thinking about switching from beer to tequila to cut down on calories. grin

If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard the last two statements I could buy you a years supply of protien powder....

strength, stamina and muscle size don't always have a direct correlation to each other.

look at powerlifters, most are borderline fat, but they can lift incredible amounts of weight, more than any bodybuilder.

my stepdad had the same attitude as you. he was a hard worker and because he had been doing it so long, he had pretty good stamina doing manual labor tasks, like hauling hay or building fence, tilling, etc. but it did'nt make him in shape either. he could lift sacks of concrete all day long but don't ask him to do a pull up cause it ain't gonna happen.

fairly high percentage of bodyfat, even though he was skinny, isn't healthy, plus the 2 packs of cigs he smoked every day didn't help. not to mention he never drank anything besides dr.pepper everyday, except for a tea at dinner.

One is going to be better off doin strength training, cardio and eating healthy than working like a dog and eating/doing whatever they want.

at that point a person is wearing out their body instead of taking care of it

true, but i very seldom see people that are very strong just from doing their day to day job.

I know some framers, deck builders and masons that are exceptions to the rule, but by and large, most people gain strength from regular weight lifting, not swinging a hammer all day.

one of the best things I've ever done was step into the weight room my junior year of high school

Agree. The guys that can pound a t-post in 3 slams can barely make a duck hunt anymore at 50 years old.

Well my buddy practices lifting a liter of Crown Royal reserve & taking shots. He recently got me into that workout.

My usual fare was lifting 2 litres of Jack Daniels into a red cup & then followed by a 12 oz life of 7-up to make it taste right.
Then I quickly lifted that 16 oz cup about 6-8 time to empty the contents.
I repeated the same routine about 5-10 times depending on whether I feel like continuing.

I would repeat the next day depending on whether I threw up from the previous days workout.
I love hunting season!

I bought the P90X about a month ago and dropped 8 lbs in the first two weeks. Went to a fishing spot on the river, about A mile down stream and wasn't winded or anything.

So I should be ready come 2 OCT.

I run the stairs at work, work out with light weights at home (20 lbs) and run behind a lawnmower all summer long, both at the house and lease.

I'm thin but if I thought for a minute I could handle a hunt out in CO, I'd only be fooling myself.

P90X is a great system, my buddy is a navy seal and he swears by it.

I did it for 6 weeks, i didn't gain any size, but i got stronger in areas that I was weak in before, it helps to change things up and do some different excercises

I exercise the entire off-season so that I dont have to worry about the number of beer curls I do during the season.

I mountain bike some of the hardest trails in Texas several times week, that helps offset the beer smile

a short ride during the week is 2hrs, weekend rides are 4-5
during deer season I miss a lot of rides though !

I practice sitting a lot. Because I sit in my truck on the way to the deer lease. I sit on my 4 wheeler on the way to my stand. I sit in my stand. I sit on my 4 wheeler on the way back to camp. Then I sit around the campfire till bedtime.

I'm older and exercise is harder to do now and it's painful for me to walk a lot so I ride a bike a few miles a day.

It does makes a difference, and dragging a deer even a short distance to load it up can kill even a young man if your not in shape.

Ya'll kid around a lot about it now, but if you want to hunt for many years to come, don't take exercise for granted.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
