Hi Everyone,

I am from out of state and want to hunt Texas again this year for deer and hogs. I came to Texas for my first hunting experience there two years ago with my buddy. We paid for a trip that was $500.00 for a buck of any size on private land no fence. We were looking for a hunt around the same price and possibly have the opportunity for does as well. Anyone know of any do it yourself ranches that have lodging or lodging close by? Thanks for all of your help!

-Patrick

One what county or town was this. Two USUALLY Hunts of that price wont be worth the drive form South Carolina. I just would hate for yall to come all this way and be disapointed. How did the last one turn out?

I also am looking to come to Texas for a whitetail hunt. If I could do it for that kind of money let me know.

I am coming from Southern California. For some reason it says SC. Yea the last hunt we drove straight through from San Diego to North Eastern Texas to a ranch that I won't mention but the hunt was horrible. Didn't see one deer and we hunted for 4 days. Love the country but this was a big thumbs down. Just wanted to find a bargain hunt on land that holds deer. Don't care about the horns.

Thanks for the replies thus far.

I am sure there is some Doe only hunts that you can do and at least get the experience of seeing alot of deer and some good ones but you have to watch for skin head only those usually happen in the late doe and spike season.. Or find a day lease in a good area and book it one of the first 3 weekends of season and those can be pretty good.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. You are probably going to have to step up to the $800-$1500 range to get a reasonable chance at a cull/management buck. If your budget is $500, then you may want to consider a doe hunt or a combo doe/pig hunt. There are plenty of reputable places mentioned on this forum and you will get what is promised. Those deals that seem to good to be true are exactly that. Dont believe all those smooth talking "outfitters" that promise you the world for next to nothing. Also, if you do find something that looks promising, post it up here and get some feed back from folks that may have already been there. Good luck to you and hope you find something here in our great State of Texas.

Agree that $500 isn't going to get you much.

If they offered "any deer you see" for $500, it's because they knew you were either going to:

a. Not see deer; or
b. Only see does.

You could get a nice cull or mgmt hunt at a solid ranch for closer to $1000, I'd think. You'd also see lots of cool stuff and have a great time.

Thanks for the replies guys! Yea it was a huge waste of money for us and it left a bad taste in our mouth. We should have done a lot more research on the ranch but then again some people are very good at sweet talking...

Get with 7mag. He is a little further west in Texas so it would shorten your drive from California but lengthen it from back east. I know Roy has some hunts posted in the outfitters section. Not quite as cheap as what your looking at but still really reasonable for what he will provide.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Don't give up you will find a place in your budget range. In todays economy you can deal with Ranges/Outfitters. I would make the deal as follows. You hunt 3 days or until each of you get 1 animal. Doe or Cull only. If you get your animals the 1st day your on the way home. If the ranchers have the deer and are confindent, they will take the offer 500.00 for 2 people, 2 animals. Doe hunts are relatively inexpensive if you do the researh and stay away from 2nd/3rd party brokers. Deal with a ranch itself.
