Heading there in October for a weekend. Food ideas, activities to do, places to stay, things off the beaten path that need to be seen, etc...lets hear 'em.

we like to stay at the Rose Hill B&B. In addition to the nice rooms and great breakfasts, they also serve a sort of upscale dinner in the evenings (extra cost). www.rose-hill.com

The Nimitz naval museum is a must see! Highly recommend Luckenbach. Don't waste your time and money with Oktoberfest. Went there last year. It was a very expensive rip-off. I had wanted for years to make it and finally did so. Very disappointed! The entertainment was OK and they had a lot of crafts and stuff for sale, but the beer and food was terriably expensive! If I remember correctly a small plastic cup (maybe 8 or 9 oz.) of beer was something like $6.00. I really like the Fredricksburg area, but I'll never waste my money going to Oktoberfest there, again. I have been told by several that it did not use to be that way a few years ago.

Went to an Oktoberfest in Galveston a week or so after that and had a fine time! No rip-offs, great entertainment, reasonable priced food and beer, a good bit of items for sale, but not as much as at Fredricksburg. Far better bang for your buck at Galveston!

I hope Oktoberfest hasn't changed that much in the last 2 years. I've got some houses rented and there's about 30 of my family heading that way. Seems like beers were around $4/12oz last time I was there. Food is expensive, but it usually is at those type deals.

We've always had a real good time.

I wont be going during the Oktoberfest. Rather wait when there isn't some event going on, cuts the cost some.

what about places to stay? closer to/in = less driving & fighting for parking. probably going to get a big suite to "crash" in.

i read about those beer gardens. i know they are spelled different but might hit a few for some tastin's. hence the need for a room close to it all.

As already mentioned the Museum of the Pacific is a MUST see. It is excellent but see everthing including the second part of the museum which is several blocks away and included in the admission price. I believe they have a reenactment weekend in October.

Mr. Gatti's is pretty good for lunch and make a visit to Dooley's 5 & 10 (if it's still in business).

The La Quinta is nice or was two years ago when I was last there.

Have fun.

Got go and eat at Alamo Springs Cafe at the Old Bat tunnel. Great food. If you wine, go to Lincoln Street. Great hang out and Auslanders as well.

Hilltop Cafe http://www.hilltopcafe.com/ on 87 about 10 mi. west is worth a trip. Really cool eclectic place in an old gas station with good food and usually have some live music.

Also El Gallo mexican restaurant about halfway between Fredericksburg and Harper on 290 is some good grub too.

Been several years since we hunted in that area but there is a guy that lives right in town that always had some massive deer in a HF behind his house. It was always pretty neat going there and dreaming.

PM me if you want to know where it is and I'll get the directions

The Old Tunnel is the bat cave mentioned. It's between Fred and Sisterdale. The Museum of the Pacific is awesome as well. Totally worth the time.

Try Mamacitas Restaurant (290 East) for some excellent Mexican Food. For a better atmosphere go to the Mamacitas in Kerrville. They have a replica of the front of the Alamo inside the restaurant. Freidhelm's Bavarian Inn (290 West) is good eating as well. There's also a good fish place near there, but I can't remember the name right now.

For a good place to stay, especially if you want to romance the wife, try Baron Creek Haven. It's a small guesthouse on 15 acres of land on the outskirts of Fredericksburg (87 North). It's very private and close to town. If you need any contact information for those, PM me and I'll look them up.

Hit Alamo Springs Cafe. Out of town a few miles. 3 million bats fly from the old tunnel, live music on weekends, incredible hamburgers. Very rustic.

The Brewery has great food and is on main street and is more of a german restaurant.
just south of Fredericksburg maybe 5-10 minutes on hwy 87 is cranky franks...which has some of the best bbq brisket and bbq in general. they arent open sundays, and they usually run out of food by dinnertime so they close but the bbq is incredible.
as for things to see, the pearl harbor museum is really cool and right off of mainstreet (hwy87).

Just to add to the list, and after hunting outside for Fredericksburg for 20 years, there are a few more places to think about....
1. GRAPE CREEK WINERY just east of town off Hwy 290
2. HERB FARM just off West Main
3. THE RACE BARN on Hwy 16 south
4. HONDO'S ON MAIN
5. VEREINS KIRCHE(Pioneer Museum) just off West Main
6. CHOCOLAT on m\Main
7. ALTORF'S or AUSLANDER - RESTAURANTS on Main
8. GARRISON BROTHERS DISTERLLERY - in Hye about 20 east of town on Hwy 290
9. FREDERICKSBURG BREWERY on Main
10. ENCHANTED ROCK STATE PARK - north of town off Hwy 16

Night life is so-so, just sorta depends on who is in town at the time!

Ain't nuthin cheap in Big "F" any more! ! !
