Hopefully some one can help me out. I was checking out the NWTF map showing the subspeices of turkeys. It shows that there are Merriams in the West Texas area. Is this corrent? If so, can some one point me to a rancher or outfitter for a hunt for them? or can u not hunt them in Texas? The TP&W booklet does make a difference between the eastern and rio, but merriam.

Yes you can hunt them. Davis Mountains is the best area to hunt them from what I have heard. Beautiful birds.

Well I went to New Mexico this past Spring and got two, but I did not know if I could get a Meriam in Texas. It would be great to three of four different turkeys here in Texas! Thanks.

I shot my first Turkey in Tom Green County 16 years ago and when an NWTF friend of mine saw the fan he asked me where I shot that Merriam turkey? I told him it was a West Texas Rio and he said no I think it is a Merriam, he took one of the feet back to Edgefield and had a biologist run dna on it and it was in fact a Merriam's turkey I had my Texas Slam and did not even know it! Oh and there are rumors that there are Gould's turkeys down around lake Amestad but TPWD & NWTF won't confirm it....
