Me I just never know! If I am on less than a box. If I am off it will be 2 full boxes

I always have about 5 shells left after two boxes and a limit. Guess that is 3 shots per bird. My last hunt I think I went 1 box per bird though.

Depends on how much time I get to shoot shotguns during the year. Back when I shot at least 200 rounds a week, birds feared me. Last year I only shot a few time and did okay. I am dreading this year, lat time I shot a shotgun was opening weekend of dove season last year.

me too lol hopefully I'll be able to shoot a few rounds a skeet before the opener but if not i can normally manage a few.

Several years ago, I took my 16 year old son out for his very first dove hunt. I had not been hunting for over 15 years. It was a father-and-son deal, and there were 5 of us pairs. Rick and I showed up with my only two shotguns - a 16 gauge double barrel and my 12 gauge bolt action duck gun with a really long barrel. All the other boys and dads had either pumps or automatics, and we felt sort of out-classed. As we went into the field, we kept hearing the other guys shooting bam-bam-bam 3 shots in a few seconds. Rick and I took our time and placed our shots pretty carefully and didn't take any wild chances.
At the end of the day, we had both shot less than a box of shells and had a total of 18 doves - ten for me and 8 for him. We sat around the camphouse listening to the boys complaining about their sore shoulders and bad shots, and found out that each one of the boys had shot at least a box of shells, and a couple had shot more than 2 boxes, and all the other boys - all four of them - had less than 10 doves all together. Suddenly, we felt a lot better about our old hardware.

10 to 12 per box as my first shot is usually just a warning shot. Not really trying to give them a sporting chance, but that's how I tell it.

1-2 boxes but it really depends on the shooting conditions and how may birds are around. Good flight=20-30 birds, slow flight=got reach out a little more

well if i shoot anything like I did today (skeet)14 out of 25 clays.

My best 12 birds little over 2 boxes.

I've only gone once, but if memory serves me correctly, I think I got 4 birds total and came close to using up 1 box.

I think one time I went dove hunting with a goal of seeing how many shells it took to get a limit, and now I cannot even remember what it was. But I do not dove hunt enough for it to really matter, it is just a box of cheap shells. It is not like ducking where you worried about the boom scouters. I don’t take shots that are out of range, that is dumb, but other than that, I’m gonna shoot, and shoot a lot!!! That is what dove hunting is all about!! Love me an auto!!

I have never in my life limited with 1 box. I agree with the fact that it would depend some on the kind of flights you see because i cannot recall once where i saw a group of like 50 or 60 at one time its always been freakin wind rockets at like 45yds in pairs or trios. Im carrying 15 boxes with the hopes of limiting at least twice in the 4 days we will be there.

It only takes me 15 shells everytime to kill 15 doves.

The only problem is I don't know which 15 shells will do the trick and have to shoot 30-40 before I find the right 15 shells.

Last year was the first year I kept track of every hunt, I averaged 9.94 doves/box. Most hunts were decent, but had 1 hunt in there where I went 1/17, that was day after I went 11/18.

My best was 12 birds (limit in 2008) with 15 shells. The birds were thick and flying right to me.

I made the mistake of bragging about it on the next hunt and shot 8 birds with 30 shells.

Definitely depends on how the dove are flying. Ive went from about 10-12 dove a box to lucky if I shot 1 dove per box. Most of the time they aint flying so dragonflies and stuff gets shot at.

This morning was about 30 shells for 11 birds. Started taking longer shots as the action got slower so my average really took a dive.
