The timber co. that owns our hunting lease just came in with a bulldoser and graded the roads. Last year we put rye grass on them and had good luck. Is there any seed we can put out now and get good deer graze. If we put out rye grass now will it come up this winter. It seems like a good time to plant something before the ground gets hard again.

you could easily plant them and pray for rain. One thing I've noticed when timber co(s) come through and grade roads is, either timber is fixin' to come out, OR, something else it about to go on. Before planting I'de get in touch with the co. to see about how much traffic those roads will see.

Your right on they are thinning the pine timber and should be finished by August 1st. As Louisiana is swampy and the timber is thick we will probably go from shotguns to rifles. Last year we put rye grass on the roads and had good luck hunting them. The problem was we had to till the roads now they are doing it for us.

the only problem you may run across is with all that weight coming out of there, those roads can turn to powder in a hurry. But I understand where you are coming from by being on a swampy riverbottom lease for a cpl years, roads are either slick/gumbo or dang near concrete.

optimal time to plant rye is when soil temp is around 70-75 degrees @ 4" deep. The time to plant is between september and mid october. Being that it's rye, you shouldn't need to worry about fertilizing, but it wouldn't do anything but help.
