I shoot .270 caliber 130 grain soft points, i recently put a JP Rifles Recoil Eliminator on the gun to reduce recoil so that I can maintain my cheek weld to the gun while keeping eyes on target and reloading next shot.

First trip out with the gun was a blast. I got 4 shots off on a group running away and nailed two.

RANGE WAS 150 - 175 yards on first shot, 200 on second, 220 - 250 on third, and the fourth was just a "cause I can" shot...

Anyways so I came back from that hunt feeling pretty nice about the setup and then I came across the Internet information for Remington's Managed Recoil rounds. I went to Cabelas, BassPro, Academy, Cheaper than Dirt, Wal-mart and nobody has them in stock. I have to try these rounds out, I cannot imagine shooting a lighter load bullet with a recoil eliminator, is the gun even going to move!??!?!

Anyone using these loads on hogs, granted we all know putting a .223 behind the ear or in the vitals will do, so this is more of a question to those using these rounds and having hogs drop with neck/shoulder/body shots...

If anyone gets a lead on where I can pickem up - tell me! No finding fee though grin

you must be afraid that your cooter is going to get bruised. man up and grow an arm. a .270 aint that bad.

they dont make managed recoil in 'panzy' loads. dont get me wrong 270 is a fine caliber but does not kick. if it hurts i suggest you get a .17HMR

she said ,why does that ammo have pretty green tips on it? the guy said its the eco-friendy ammo.

I shoot the managed recoil out of a 30-06, but like the others said I don't remember seeing managed recoils in a smaller round. The point is to take the larger calibers and bring them down to the medium-smaller caliber.

Managed recoil rounds do come in a .270 caliber. Around San Antonio I can find them at academy or bass pro. I have a box that I keep onhand for specific uses. they are 115 grain and the load is dropped. They have always worked well out to around 200 yards where the trajectory is essentially the same as a 130grain full load. After about 180 yards they drop wickedly and lose alot of energy REALLY fast making them an irresponsible and unreliable choice for anything longer range. I don't recommend them for large hogs but decently a placed shot at 120 yards or less and under 200LB has always worked just fine. I like them for the little Texas whitetails 'cause they drop game no problem and save more meat.

Federal Fusion makes a low recoil .270 load (145 gr). At 100 yards, it has about 1,000 ft/lbs less energy than the 130 gr. Fusion load (1,316 vs 2,311). When both are set for a 100 yard zero, the drop on the low recoil is -7" at 200 yards versus -2.9" for the standard load in 130 gr. You'd get more energy at 100 yards out of a .243 load.

EDIT: After a second look, the load specs for low recoil Fusion .270 is almost the same as a 30-30 in energy and drop at 100 yards and beyond.

There is an advantage to being able to watch the impact of the bullet on the game. And it also makes for quicker follow-up shots if there is a sounder of hogs in front of you. The more you kill the better! Got nothin' to do with being a "man".

i don't know much about the ballistics of the managed re-coil loads, but i hunt with a .270. my little brother hand-loads all my ammo. i shoot. 150grn nosler partitions that muzzle about 2500fps. that is about 200fps slower than factor load. i load it down not because of recoil, but because i still get ample performance/penetration at that speed and i tear up a little less meat on the shoulder.

i don't always shoulder shoot. but in the event that i do, i don't like to rip up a lot of meat.

this load is very effective on deer/hogs out to 150-200yds. beyond that the slower veolicty starts to show in your balistics.

Funny guys... This thread is about effectiveness of light loads on hogs and we turn it into a discussion about "Man-Hood"...

SoOoOooOoooO anyways - I was just at BassPro and Cabelas last week, I guess they restocked... I will have to go back again, oh darn grin

I will get a box and try them out nexy trip and report back on how they work on Mr. Piggy.

Thanks for the input

Get a .243. I dont understand why people use managed recoil loads to hunt. Unless you are teaching your kid to shoot properly?

Maybe because a 270 or 30/06 has more versatility? Using managed recoil loads, you can enjoy great performance on deer up to 200 yards or so, along with 243-type recoil.

Then with the same rifle, you can load full power ammo and have a good elk rifle or long range trophy deer rifle, beyond the capabilites of a 243.

Well in my case I hunt with a night vision monocular adapted to the back of the dayscope. So to save the $$$ equipment $$$ I started with a .270 and did the recoil eliminator. It worked great the one exception was after the fourth shot the battery cover (screw mounted) backed off the night vision and the whole sight picture went black.

So I am now considering adding managed recoil to my hog killing ammo for shots under 175 yards , hence my reason for asking this question to begin with. A few of the responses indicate that the loads will work for under 300lbs...

There is one way to find out !

I finally got my hands on a box of 115 grain managed recoil remington core-lokt bullets.

I am headed out tomorrow for 3 nights of hunting.

At the very least I aim to get a video snippet of regular loads versus these , best case scenario is a chance at live targets!

I was not impressed. I have tried to depict in the photos below the actual recoil experienced between the 130 grain loads I use on the regular and these remington managed recoil loads.

I attempted to have all spacing and shooting position the same but as you can see my shooting position is a bit screwy because this gun is setup as a deditcated night gun. The scope is too far forward to address the weapon correctly BUT what is interesting is the patterns acheived on target. I guess that is proof enough that my shooting position, wind, etc were pretty consistent throughout this field test.

Anyways I had fun with it - thats what is important but bottomline the 50% less sticker on the box is just that, 50% truth and the rest all talk with no walk.

HERE IS RESTING AND FULL RECOIL ON THE 115 gr loads

HERE IS THE RESTING AND FULL RECOIL ON THE 130 gr loads

And the results (left target 130 gr and right target 115 grain)

Oh and BTW you will notice that when I shoot the gun in daylight I dont have the buttstock against my shoulder, this is due to the needed eye relief for sight picture.

So I am able to handle the recoil all with my hand and wrist only because of the JP rifle recoil eliminator on the end of the barrel.
