Active tropical years such as 2005 benefit Texas upland birds. The 2010 tropical activity is shaping up to resemble that of 2005, a good year for upland birds. Here's why, when we think of tropical activity in the Gulf of Mexico we think flood, wind and destruction. But the moisture from those storms benefit north and central Texas vegetation.
In addition, in active tropical years like 2005 and 2010, the tropical activity on Pacific side of Mexico also benefits Texas. That pacific tropical activity forces moisture laden cloud up through the mountains of central Mexico north into west Texas and into the panhandle and the rolling plains. The dry line that starts in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico also draws up tropical pacific moisture and drops over west Texas and the panhandle. The greater the moisture the greater the vegetation and a greater number of insects equals to fat healthy chicks and greater survival. With the chick fat and happy the hens have less stress, they are also fat and healthy they can easily lay and hatch another clutch of chicks. Moral of the story, Tropical activity is not all bad.

Those areas with "abnormal dryness" creeping in received relief in the past 2 days. Bet you that most of it is gone when the weekly update (Drought Monitor)comes out on Thursday.

Our new lease in south central Oklahoma got three inches two weeks ago & 2 inches yesterday. And it was raining there around 2:00 today when I talked my buddy.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I talked to my Dad, who lives in Ballinger, and he said they have been getting some great rain and it is way to wet for him to even work his cotton fields. YEA!!! Maybe some quail this year on our land!!!
