I am getting hooked up through my job. I get to pick out a shotgun around $1700. I already have a 12ga pump and I really would like to have a nice O/U. I mostly dove hunt and am getting into upland hunting with my new bird dog. I will do some duck hunting too but could just use my pump for that I guess? Give me some suggestions!!!

You can't go wrong with a Beretta OU 12ga. Great for pheasant, dove, duck, whatever. I use a semi auto instead,it's an Xtrema 2 that I use for pheasant but it gets heavy at the end of the day. Upside is no shell limit on upland birds so I can put on a mag extension and load up a bunch of shells for those times when a lot of birds flush at once.

Yeah I'm a little unsure if I want an O/U or a Semi-Auto at this point.

well either way, O/u or Semi-auto beretta has some good choices... as does browning

learn something new everyday and you will have never wasted a day.

More importantly, are ya'll hiring?!?!? haha

That is awesome for you. At that price range you can get a really nice/higher end semi or a decent (relatively speaking, meaning there entry level stuff is better than other's high end) O/U from Browning or Beretta. Both are great choices, but I am personal partial to Beretta.

I helped find a Browning Citori for my friend for around $1200 and it shoots up to 3 1/2" shells.

Stick with the two B's...pick up, mount, feel, shoot all you can and buy what fits you and what you like.

Or you could buy you and all your hunting buddies TriStars bolt nuts

You could not go wrong with the Silver Pigeon. One thing is that you said you have a 12. If you shoot doves alot or really if you don't you will find yourself trying to make it more fun---by knocking a limit out with a smaller gauge. Also, you said upland---which means carrying a gun around. You might look at the 20 silver pigeon. If you really get a great raise, after that look at the 28 auto from benelli. It is 4.5 or so pounds. Just another toy to have. Good luck

I have a 391 I use for sporting clays, trap and skeet. Its a good all around gun, been using it in competitive shoots since 2001. Best advice is buy what feels right to you.

$1,700= Six Tristars, a case of shells to break them in, and a cleaning kit for the once every 2 years cleaning.

By switching to Geico last year, you could have saved up to $500, or bought two Tristars.

If I was in your shoes I would pick up and try all the Beretta 686 variants, the Browning Citoris, Browning Cynergy, or the SKB models.

Don't you know that quality built shotguns like Tristar don't need to be broke in! grin

Makes sense...I never thought of it like that before. Makes me mad that I buy a nice shotgun, and the tolerances are so tight I have to break it in.

I wish to heck I was as well off as you guys. I could get rid of my not so worthy Tristar and buy a real gun. If you would care to meet me at my place in Bowie I will be glad to burn some shells with you at clays and we can see how many I can go through without jamming. You guy's are freakin amazing, talk crap about something you have never even shot. Good luck with your arrogance and severe cases of know it all syndrome.

It's not that at all. Best advice to anyone is to buy what is in their budget but don't come on here and try to seriously compare a Tristar to a Beretta.

Exactly. Im glad your Tristar is working out for you, even though I look at things a little different.

Quick question. If you could have gotten a Beretta 390 for $450 would you have chosen it over a Tristar for less, even though you might have to save up a while longer?

The whole point of my argument which was missed by a few was that your probability of getting a lemon is way higher with a Tristar than a Beretta. Why take that risk when you can spend another $200 and get a used Beretta 390?

I said on the original post (under $450 semi 12) I got it as a gift. But having said that I have a M1 and have owned an older Beretta which I never liked. Granted it was an 80's model but it was huge looking with a 26" barrell. I am not saying any of the others aren't great. My M1 is great, my 3 auto5's are great in their own way, it's just why run something down if you have never laid hands or shot it? I haven't made sport of anybodys equipment and I just think taking the "my stuffs better than your stuff" approach is childish. But if that's the way some wanna roll then have at it. I am over and out and will never say another word about my alleged POS.
Edit, personally I never compared it to a beretta, I just said what a good experience I have with mine. Nobody had mentioned Tristar on this high dollar post until it was made the butt of a hit and run.
