How is thier eye site, hearing. Do you need to play the wind like deer. Does there ears perk up when on alert. Do you aim for a heart and lung shot. How do you tell a difference from a bore or borett. For meat do you shoot the smalls one. Educated me..Please before I start hunting these things.
Thanks, Jigfish

Overall very intelligent animals despite what some may say. I've had some cases where they are almost more sensitive and cautious than deer. If you're after the meat I'd recommend staying away from the big boars. Not that they aren't edible but they will not be nearly as good as a younger sow. They can be very tough to kill, but a good heart or lung shot should do the trick.
From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it...

Rage in the cage, through the shoulder if you can, or at least quartering through. The vitals are low and up front. They can smell you so stay off the trails and down wind of where they come in.

I've only killed one pig with my bow but it was with a magnus stinger. I've heard some say that fixed BHs are better for pigs because of the thick cartilage shield YMMV. The best eating are the ones that are recently weened, usually about the size of a small dog.
As for hunting them I agree with what was said above, stay away from your feeder area before you sit. Use a cover scent and play the wind. I use a pop up blind that I think also helps to minimize scent.
They are smart, smarter than dogs. We all know how clever coyotes can be when being hunted or called to, hogs are as smart or smarter. They sure are fun to hunt though, everyone complains about them spreading through the state, I think its kind of a mixed blessing because I consider them an excellent game animal. Granted, I don't have any farm land or crops being damaged. Good luck!

their eyesight isn't that good, but they can pick up movement. They have a great sense of smell..(they could find a kernel of corn @ a landfill), but the more you get of them in a herd, the dumber they get. A cpl feeding is a tough task to put a stalk on to get within bow range, get a herd of 10+ and they tend to lose track of their surroundings. On my old lease, a herd of 20-40 every evening coming through was a sure thing. It was a blast sneaking up on them through the palmetto thickets and slinging arrows at them.

that web site is money i was just about to tell you everything i have read from there but from experience there eyes sight is very poor if you have them walk upon you or you walk up on them just dont move i have had them running past me stop and try and figure out what i was while i was setting up a ladder to fill my feeder set up i just stood still and the little ones came in with in feet but the bigger ones smelled me right before they came with in feet of me.
they can smell and hear really well so if its real windy you wont find them coming out into the open much since they wont be able to hear as well i have found and been told
there smell is great so try and play the wind but if you cant just try to back off a good distance it seems to work ok like that
from what i have seen they dont perk their ears but instead raise or jerk there head real fast almost like they are about to run but they just pause to smell and listen and if they dont find anyting wrong they will keep going i have shot hogs with a bow watch run run off and the others not leave but keep eating
the little ones are best from meat if its a small male it still taste ok to me but a small female would be best atleast for most people and the bigger the male the more likely you will not see it with piglets

great nose and ears, hunt them as cautiously as a whitetail.
Eyesight is generally poor but at times you will be surprised with how they pick you up.
Pigs find safety in numbers and a large sounder is easier to hunt. BUT, remember that with 30 pigs thats 30 noses and 60 ears to bust you...Although pigs are greddy feeders and IMO easier to hunt, dont underestimate them. More than a few times I have been outsmarted by the wary beast.
pick you wind wisely and try to learn the pigs on your property. I believe that patterning them (long term) is absolutely impossible. But a sounder can get accustomed to feeding a certain spot regularly (until you shoot them out) If you can try to rotate hunting sets to relieve pressure, if you plan to hunt them regularly.
Shot placement is argued by some but agreed upon by most. Heart/most of lung sits tight and low under the shoulder. Tough to get to perfectly broadside, but a good quartering away shot allows for perfect shot. I prefer strong quartering away and tuck it in hear the back of the rib cage so arrow ends up exiting or sticking far shoulder. On larger pigs (especially boars) the large shield is strong and nearly impenetrable. Avoid shooting 120+ pigs broadside in shoulder IMO.
I am partial to fixed blades because of the overall toughness and will of a wild pig. I try to minimize room for error and keep it simple. I am no expert but I have killed many pigs with a bow. I recommend G5 Montec/Montec CS, I have heard great things about Magnus stinger/Buzzcut but have no personal experience.
hope this helps

Hog are very predictable in the fact that they are unpredictable! You can take all the precautions in hunting and get busted, then on the other hand you can be out in the woods making noise smelling like a cheap New Orleans hooker while wearing a clown costume and have hogs running you over.
I've had hogs come out in broad daylight while I was dove hunting, and other times they have been so close to them that I could smell them and not see them, that's what I love about hog hunting. I really like hog hunting better than deer hunting for that reason. Like Forest Gump said, " You never know what You're gonna get!"

What works best for me is to make a rubbing post near my stand. To make one all you'll need is a tree or some kind of post that you don't like and wrap a large rag around it then soak it with diesel fuel. Hogs will start rubbing on it the first time they smell it. Diesel also helps hide your scent so the wind is always in your favor.

if you haven't been using diesel corn don't use diesel as a cover scent. The hogs will sniff you out from a mile away, literally.

Diesel corn is nothing more than corn and diesel mixed together. Most people only use diesel corn when they are having problems with raccons. The reason I'm saying make a diesel rub for it last weeks longer than diesel corn and if you have deer in the area they still can eat corn from your feeder. And yes hogs will sniff that diesel from a over a mile away and come running in because hogs love it.
