Man, I appreciate the offer but I can't afford to have one shipped. I bet they are goods dogs.

I have a JRT that I've worked for trailing. I started out with a liver drag when she was almost 2. I got a very late start, but she didn't mind a bit. I think we did liver drags twice and she was bored. These were short 20-30 yard drags at the house. I asked a guy on another forum that runs tracking dogs for some tips. He told me to get rid of the liver and switch to blood. I had been saving blood from the packages of deer meat that we eat for some time. Because I didn't start until September, I was able to get a tail shortly after that when bow season opened. I put the tail on a string, drug it while dripping blood, leaving the tail at the end. When she gets to the end of the trail we have a short tug of war session which she "always wins". She's done mock trails like this up to about 300yds. Make it fun for them. I think any breed with a good nose will track blood, just match the other traits to your liking. I also think it doesn't really matter what kind of blood you train them on. Once you put them on the trail, they are going to follow that scent. I left out the analogy that was releyed to me about the liver drag. The veteran tracker/trainer told me that dragging a liver was like trying to stump a college math professor with third grade math problems. It was very evident with my dog that was the case. The liver was no challenge and bored her. If I let her think she is going to get to play with that deer tail, she won't stop until she finds it! Keep it short in the beginning and keep it fun for them! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info tgil. I have a female catahoula puppy myself, almost 14 weeks, and I am going to take her to the lease next weekend. I will be doing what you said except for pigs since it's not deer season yet.
The beauty of the Second Ammendment is it won't be needed until they try and take it.

I have trained sent hounds for twenty years and the first thing I will tell you is let him grow up before you start trying to train him. Let him be a pup and learn basic obedience before you ever try to train him for his job. Having one that minds you will make training him alot easier. I say training that's not really what is happening. You are exposing him to what it is you want him to do and he ill either do it or not. You cant train a dog to run a track a certain way he just does what comes natural to him. The dog more than likely is not going to trail blood anyway they run the sent of the animal. If they run the blood sent then they wouldn't be able to find animals that aren't bleeding. ( the reason they are used). They trail the wounded animal and not others because that is just what they do. The same with any other dog worth their salt. They finish the track they started. That's what makes the great ones great.

Well, you just contradicted everything else I have read on here & all over the internet. BY NO MEANS am I saying your wrong. I don't know anything about this to say you are wrong or right. Please don't take it as I'm saying your wrong. BUT, now I have to do alot more research due to your input. Thank you for your suggestions.

Well I didn't mean to make things more difficult for you I was just giving my opinion based on my experience. Starting them to young teaches them a lot of bad habits and you cant correct those habits because you will confuse them. Start with obedience first it makes everything else so much easier. Then when the pup is about 8 months old move to short lessons of what it is you want him to do. Be very careful about laying to many drags a lot of pups will start running your track instead of the drag.I have seen field trial dogs run the four wheeler and bay it instead of the drag. Teach him one thing at a time until you know he has it then move to the next thing. Trying to train a 2 to 6 month old pup will work on some dogs but it has ruined more than it has ever made. They get board and burnt out then you get frustrated with them and everything goes to hell after that. Let him grow up and he will be just fine.
