I do have a range finder. but has anyone ever put out like a yardage markers. Maybe something on a tree or a marker on the ground to let them know the distance when the game walks by or is that just plain wrong to do, like cheating.
Thanks, Jigfish

Nope not cheating. I do it at every stand I hunt. No guessing and one less thing to worry about when that P&Y steps out.

I have been known to pile rocks on top of each other as yardage markers, or use flagging tape on trees.

I try to pick out landmarks with my range finder, I don't like to walk around where I'm hunting.

I pick out certain junipers, cactus, rocks...whatever is naturally available, and use the rangefinder to identify their distances and memorize them so I don't have to fiddle with the range finder with an animal present.

I still do not take a rangefinder with me when bowhunting, so I have to do that. I've found that corn piles work best.

I went as far at to paint a couple large rocks to use as a marker. It helps a lot..

Those tinks orange scent containers that hang on a tree limb for deer scent work well for that too. 2 birds, 1 stone.

I'll put out surveyor's tape during the preseason when I scout, and trim branches and stuff.
At my folks' place, I've hunted the same clearings for so long, I know how far things are.
