My son shot a nice buck this past youth weekend. I decided to skull mount the head myself. I skinned the head then soaked it in tap water that night. The next morning, the sink had about 15 large " grub -worm" sized maggots crawling all over it. Has anyone ever seen or heard of deer being infested with a large grub-type of maggot? I've taken around 40 deer but I have never seen this before. I tried surfing the web for some info but I haven't found the right web site. The maggot is about 1" long, oval shaped, grub colored with black specs, and has no apparent head, just a mouth. Has anyone ever seen this before?

A friend of mine who's a veterinarian told me about some of the parasites that can infest whitetails--it was pretty stomach-turning, believe me. And one of the parasites she mentioned were large maggot-like larvae.

So, yes, I've heard of it, but thankfully never seen it.

I have seen them come from the heads after we have skinned them out. Must come from the sinus cavities or somewhere..

I never saw one while skinning the head, so I don't think that the maggot is just below the skin. They had to be inside the deer, like you mentioned. I thought I found one coming out of the neck meat.
Now, I can't help but think about them nasty things every time I bite into that deer sausage.

Don't worry about it - can't nothing live after a good cooking. Besides those parasites are full of flavor and protien...and, when you bite into that sausage, you can't tell meat from foreign matter anyway.

Get over it...

With the deer hunters that I know and have met on this site I would have to say the maggots fell from the hunter onto the deer.

I have seen them out of whitetails over at the taxidermist several times. A few come in like that from South Texas every year. I don't know what causes them to be there or how the heck the deer live with it, but it sure freaks ya out when you first see it.

They are normal and are contained in the respiratory system of a lot of white-tailed deer. Many times when you think a deer is sick it is actually just being agitated by the worm. I believe the culprit is Dictyocaulus viviparous (lung worm) but it has been a while since Wildlife Diseases class. It is also common in cows, red deer, elk, and several other animals. It is completely harmless to people and most of the time not fatal to deer except in extreme cases. A major cause is the improper feeding of deer. Many people don’t realize that the way they feed deer will spread these types of things.

I asked our meat processor and the game warden about it several years ago when I had just discovered it, and they said the same thing, it was a parasite. All I could think about it "r" for rabbits.....
It's not pretty, but if cooked properly, won't hurt ya

Max, this would be a good one to take over to the Taxidermy section. Those guys might be able to tell just how common it is.

They are likely Nose Bots. They are harmless but ugly.

I was at the lease once, passing time in the middle of the day and decided to catch some perch in one of the stock tanks for a fry that night. Caught a bunch of heavy monsters.
Started to clean them on the bank. Everytime I went to gut one it had a belly full of maggots. Then I noticed the maggots were still alive. I walked around to the far side of the tank, there in the tall weeds was a dead cow half in the water. The fish and turtles were having a party.

Look at it this way...at least you can see these "Bot" larvae. If you knew what lives in wild game at the microbial level, you'd probably give up meat all together.

Hey...it's not that bad!!! If we know what crawled around in our own mouths we'd gag a maggot ourselves sometimes...

The only time deer even pay attention to these parasites is if they go into full flight and get a couple down their windpipe and into their lungs. Otherwise it's as if they have a big ol' dip of "worm snuff"....
