my son is pulling back 50 but he wants to be pulling back 60 before bow season starts. what is a good workout he can do to be able to pull back more weight? we have a homegym, dumbells, bench, and a pullup bar. so what should he do so he can pull back more weight?

how old is your son?
if he's in the 16 and up range, get him to do back exercisies, like bent over rows, lat pull downs, pull ups with palms facing out, etc. anything to strengthin' the back
rows will work the best, do both with dumbells and with the bar
didn't say how big a kid he is, but I'm 5'6 around 150lbs and can shoot 70 lbs all day long, most of my buddies get fatiuged shooting 60lbs after about 20 arrows

I was also told to use the rubber bands like they use in theropy. Different colors are different strengths. Just tied them off to the height that the bow is held and start pulling.
It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.

he is 13 5'6 115lbs he can shoot 50lbs but wants to shoot 60 before deer season WHY!!!!! 50lbs will kill a deer just as good as 60lbs,i can kill a deer with a stick bow that shoots 170fps. he will get to 60lbs sooner or later thats part of growing and developing muscles no need to rush it

agree with kobeer, if he can pull 50 then he's good, at 13 years old, I would't have him hitting the weights.
use the bands and bodyweight exercises, like pull ups

No need to go to 60. There is an article on archery talk right now by Ted Nugent. He talks about killing a 400 lb Austrian Boar with a 50lb bow. IMO your son should get comfortable shooting 50 then as he grows and gets stronger he can move up. Way too much ego involved in these types of decisions.

I agree with everyone else!!! 50 pounds is perfect for his age....speed and however many pounds you pull back doesn't mean everything....shot placement does!!!!

go put the bow on a crono if the bow shoots anywhere near 240fps then that bow is well capable of killing any animal in north america. also you can try removing any excess weight from the string and maybe go with a micro diameter arrow like a beman mfx @8.6gpi with a different broadhead maybe

I am 5'10" 225 and I shoots 69lbs all summer. When hunting season rolls around I used another bow set at 55lbs. I can draw and hold all day. On 90% of all hits I get a complete pass through

I was thinking hitting high on the hogs. best thing he could do is bump the bow up a little at a time to get comfy with it. That was the route I took at that age and had my martin jaguar maxed out before summer was over.

I went to Wal-Mart and bought a set of exercise bands. The bands are circular like a big rubber band so I would put the band in my left hand like holding the riser then put three fingers around the band with my right hand and just keep drawing until I "burned out" and my muscles were fatigued. I did one burnout each night. This helped me a lot.
If you have access to a cable weight machnine you can do the same thing. put your left hand against the machine and pull the cable just like pulling the bow string back. I have done this several times when in the gym.
All the back rows and such did not seem to help. When I was lifting I more than doubled my wieght in all my back exercises, but none of them really helped my draw weght much because it is a different movement which uses a different set of muscles.

Other than what I mentioned above, the next best thing is shoot a lot. I used this method too. I would give each limb a half turn and shoot like that for a week or so until it wsa eas again. Then I would give a half turn on both limbs and shoot till it was easy agian. I had my bow maxed out at 70lbs doing this. Then I got in the stand and couldn't draw on a deer. I realized when I was practicing I was doing the full lift your bow and bring it down as you draw move. When I was in my climber I tried to do the simple draw straight and that just did not happen. Now my bow is set on 55-60 lbs and I leav it that way. Boy was I when I couldn't draw in the stand. I actually, did this abuot 4 times lowering the weight each time until I got back down to the 55-60 lbs. That is 4 deer I missed out on shooting because I wanted to shoot a lot of weight. I still don't have a bow kill......Haven't had shot opportunity since I fixed my weight problem. Sorry for the long post. Probably more info than needed, but I hope my lesson helps others.

I agaree with the others, shoot what is easy to pull. You can strain yourself and pull some muscles and might be out for the season.

Is his bow maxed out at right now at 50lbs? This may not be the most conventional method, but I don't see why it wouldn't work..... If you've still got room to adjust, sneak in and crank the limbs down slightly, maybe an 1/8 to 1/4 turn each, then send him back out to practice. In a month or so, do it again. Sooner or later he'll have to adjust the sights, but hey, that's just more shooting time which is what we're aiming for, right? After 3 or 4 months, he'll be up to 60lbs before he knows it...literally. This would accomplish two things...1) more practice (you can never get enough practice), and 2) slowly letting him adjust up to the weight he wants to be.

I agree with others 50lbs will kill. Remember shot placement, maybe you should think about sswitching broadheads.

13 is a little young for him to start hitting the weights. getting started too early will hurt him in the long run. let the strength come naturally until he gets a few years older.

Can he shoot 50lbs and hold it? If not I wouldn't go up any.
Thanks, Jigfish
