I made the mistake of NOT mailing you my bird this year and chose to use a guy here in Houston. I will never make that mistake again and will always mail you my birds in the future. The guy I used here in Houston did a good job, but the mount definitely was not on your level and he came highly recommended. Your work is truly outstanding sir!

You can mail birds? How would one go about doing that?

Shipping Birds

* Remember to contact your taxidermist with the tracking number and to remind him or her to be expecting the frozen package.

* We don't recommend using the postal service as Fed/Ex and UPS are better choices for "next day air" service and the package can be traced. Always ship on a Monday and no later than a Tuesday so that the packages don't lay over on a weekend and thaw out.

* Note: Do not bother insuring the package as the carriers will not pay a claim on any Frozen Items that are spoiled or lost. More importantly, pack the birds correctly to guard against any layovers or delays in delivery.

_________________

a. First - determine which location you will be shipping the bird from and what time their driver picks up. For best results, you will want to place the birds in the shipping box right before dropping them off with the shipper, in the afternoon or evening hours if possible.

b. Next - Print out a Yellow Migratory Waterfowl Tag for each bird. (These can be found on the website). Fill out completely and sign. Attach to each bird. This must be done so as to be in compliance with the USFWS - Lacy Act.

c. Place your Frozen bird(s), which should be in ziploc bags, inside a small sytrofoam box or better yet, a plastic cooler. The box should be big enough to allow you to crumple up newspapers on the bottom, side and tops to insulate the bird and protect it from exterior damage.

c. Address and Label the box with the contents to include species, amount and sex of the bird(s) Example: Frozen Birds - (2) Wood Duck Drakes

d. During the Winter Months you can ship "2nd Day Air". IF YOU ARE IN TEXAS – Ship Ground UPS and it will arrive the next day and cost a lot less. During the hot Summer Months, always ship, "Next Day Air." Although the next day air is more expensive, it will be necessary to insure the bird(s) arrive in good condition. Depending on where the birds are coming from it may be recommended to include several ice packs with the birds.

International Issues

* If you are hunting in Mexico for example, you will have to check your frozen birds at the Border with US Customs and the USDA. You must have the birds sent to a USDA approved taxidermist. Once at the border or airport you will give the agent your taxidermist's information and it will be checked against the list on the computer. If the taxidermist is approved to handle USDA Migratory Birds, then the container will be cleared and sealed.

* Once cleared you can hand carry the sealed box to your taxidermist, or place it on the airplane or have them shipped via Fed/Ex from the border.

* The birds MUST go to the approved taxidermist to be opened and dipped before mounting.

Any other questions, please don't hesitate to hollar. (817) 691-2625 - Matt

matt - the main reason i didn't mail it off was because i was concerned about damage to the mount during the return trip. Can you provide a little info on the way you package the mounts when sending them back? The shipping method you use? Insurance?

Thanks.

It's funny how it's worked out. As I regulate shipped birds to within the State of Texas, folks will send them out and then come out to Ft. Worth for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or a family visit, or a Cowboys Game, or conference, etc,etc and then pick them up while they are here. Most stop by Cabela's while they out here and just make a trip out of it.

Still I ship a great deal of birds back down to the coast and it's pretty simple:

Bag the bird and "float" on a bid of peanuts in a heavy cardboard box. Fill the rest of the box up with peanuts, tape securely and it will arrive at your door in excellant shape. Just put your hand into the box and find the wood that it's attached to and carefully remove from the box. Sometimes you might have to "zip" the primary feathers back up with your index finger and thumb, but after that they are ready to display. banana2

1) UPS standard insurance usually covers a bird mount...if more than one birds are in a box, insurance is added but doesn't cost to much to do so.
2) Cost of shipping a bird back is 40.00 to box plus ground rates.
