Lots of people use Mobile 1 for gun lube.

No, I mean why would you use motor oil? CLP works so well...

There were guys on the forum talking about using motor oil for lube a while back. I think one of the main reasons is that clp and other lubes will evaporate in the summer heat and not protect as well. Also the fact that a quart of oil will last you for a heck of a long time.

Synthetic motor oils work great as gun lubes, especially on the AR platform. CLP evaporates relatively fast and its too thin. I use Royal Purple 20W-50 as a primary lube for my ARs. It stays put a lot better than CLP and it's a lot more heat and evaporation resistant. People that bad mouth the use of synthetic motor oil have likely not tried it. It works great on the 1911 too.

Quart of Mobil-1 or Royal Purple price compared to a quart of CLP?
Synthetic Motor oil is cheaper I believe...

Depends on how long I think it is going to sit. I have a bunch of stuff in my shop. Mobil 1, CLP, Marvels Mystery Oil etc etc..

Motor oil is NOT intended for your firearms. Cold weather will.........well, you'll learn.

Most 45s are set up so loose they will function with rear end grease on them. As you suggest 31 degrees is sub freezing but if you're talking about fine precision rifles with precise triggers in below zero to low teens there is simply better choices than motor oil.

Oh, that is a real concern of mine here in Texas. Have you actually ever had a malfunction in sub zero temperatures due to the use of synthetic motor oils? Have you ever even used synthetic motor oils for gun lube? May I remind you that synthetic motor oils come in different weights. 0W-20 would be great for those cold Deer Park winters. Rear end grease?? I am not sure what that is. If you are talking about gear lube (80-90W) then yes one could use it on a 1911. I know many that use lithium automotive grease.

How about dust and crud? I would think the detergents in the oil would cause the crud to float and accumulate...

1 quart of Mobil 1 can last several years. And a great lube as well.
