I have homes in both New Jersey and Lakeway,TX, but these days I have to spend 99.9% of my time up north. Not much farmland left were I live. So, I set up at the edge of a long abandoned quarry out in the pine barrens hoping to see some woodchucks. I wasn't expecting much (not exactly ideal habitat for woodchucks), but to my surprise a nice size chuck showed itself right on top of a little ridge about 120 yds away. I quickly dispatched it. I was shooting a Cooper M22 chambered in 6mm Remington loaded with 70 gr Sierra BKs. Made quite a mess. I stayed put hoping more might show themselves. Not 10 minutes later, from out of the brush trots a red fox making a bee-line for my dead chuck. I droped him about five yds away from the chuck. Fifteen minutes later, red fox #2 comes trotting to the same spot. Dropped him about three yds from the other fox. Five minutes later, here comes fox # 3. After seeing his two dead buddies, he turned and headed back for the brush. Got off a shot, but missed. Twenty minutes later, here comes #4. Killed it within a few yds of the others. Waited a bit longer, but no more action. I wasn't calling and didn't go out expecting to see predators. I had never shot a fox before (although I botched a shot a gray fox down in Texas this past February) and now I have three in less than an hour. Two things impressed me about this. 1: Fox aren't very clever after all. 2: A 70 gr BK loaded to 3600 fps DESTROYS varmints to a degree that I have never seen before. Literally blew them to pieces.

You are right, they are not clever at all. They will jump in the back of the truck with you if you let em get close enough

I only took one pic and it is way too graphic to post. Had I known I was going to encounter fox, I would have loaded something a little more fur friendly. By the way, do fox always smell really bad or was it just because they were blown open?

I shot 3 foxes this weekend. 1 of 3 was 5 yards from me and I had no camo or scent spray on. They are very dumb.

That's a funny story....dumb foxes, lol. No call or nothing and have 4 come in. I swear, there must not be any where I live, cause I haven't called one in, out there yet!

Mmmm Hmmm

Bet that was a blast. I shot a fox with a 7mag from about 15 yards away! There was chilli everywhere!

Do you have a lot of yotes in your area? I'm no expert on the subject, but I've heard areas with large coyote populations generally don't have a lot of fox. The yotes eat em. Here in Jersey, we do have coyote, but they are pretty rare. The fox population is healthy though you rarely see them. Prior to the other day, I had only ever seen two (excluding road kill). I believe it was the scent of the dead chuck that brought them in. They all came in from down wind of where the chuck was lying.

When I varmint hunt (which in NJ is mostly for woodchucks), I generally opt for a rifle/ammo combo that will cause the most "terminal effect" possible. Both because it reduces the risk of ricochet and because it's just plain fun. However, had I known I was going to see fox that day, I would have brought something a little less destructive. I would have liked to have gotten a close look at them relatively intact and also gotten some good (and postable) pics. I tried to position them to get a reasonably tasteful pic, but there was just no way. They were torn up something aweful. Also, they smelled so bad. After I moved the first one, the smell on my hand was nearly made me puke. I had no gloves or water to wash off with, so I didn't touch the others.

I rarely see a coyote at my place in Fisher County but I can't go a trip without seeing a fox.
