I just picked up a Ruger in .257 Roberts. The FFL I had it sent to ordered me a couple boxes of ammo. BUT, what he ordered is .257 Roberts + P. I can't shoot that out of a regular .257 Roberts, can I? I read where the +P has 4,000 more PSI than the regular, so I am doubting it very much.
Thanks in advance for any info!

Assuming you are referring to a Ruger M77, it will work fine.

For reasons apparently unknow to everyone, the factories have always loaded the 257R to lower pressures than other similar cartridges. A few years ago, Winchester and some others brought out the +P ammo for the 257. It is higher than normal 257factory pressure, but still lower than the 243, 270, 30-06, etc.

Yes, M77. Thanks JJH! That's what I was wanting to know. I didn't think it would work with the extra 4000lb's of pressure, but you're the 2nd person to tell me it would work.
I appreciate ya!

d.g.: Bet you're gonna love your 257! If you are a handloader, you can really make it shine. If you don't handload, I'd recommend you look at Hornady or Federal ammo for your Roberts. Both the Remington and Winchester loads utilize a 117gr Round Nose bullet, which limits its long range potential considerably.

'Course, it all your shots are gonna be at, say, 150-200 yards or less, the RN's will work just fine.

I picked up some Hornady's, 117gr. BTSP. I don't reload (yet) but a co-worker/friend does, and he said he will hook me up with whatever I need. I'd like to get into reloading sometime or another, though. I doubt I take a shot over 200 yards, either.
Thanks for the info!

THe 257bob is a great mild mannered round, Like has been said for some reason most factory loads are loaded to lower presures the +P just brings it closer to what it should be. My favorite load is 100gr Nosler partition,47gr Hodgdon Hybrid 100V in Hornady brass, this load is 1gr below max listed but still get 3100fps in my Remington

Please post your results when you get the scope done. My boys shoot The Bob and I have had some challenges with recipes but have a few working OK now. I read and store anything I can find on this caliber.

Thanks,
Jim

As it has already been stated, Factories underload the cartridge. By handloading you can really get some great velocity numbers out of it.

Glock perfection. The very best and only handgun I will ever have. Nothing comes close!

I have a 257 custom built and love it. Mine would not shoot 117 grain loads at all- I thought I had a bad scope, rings, etc. Then I tried 100 grain loads and it shoots them under an inch. I use the Midway Hornady Custom loads- 100 grain Nosler Partition. Expensive, but until I get my relaoder set up it's worth it. My 257 is the one on the left:

98 Mauser action with a Flaig's barrel. I bought the barreled action "in the white" and had a gunsmith of mine beadblast it, add a Timney trigger and 3-position safety. Another friend of mine did the wood work- he took the semi-inletted English walnut stock shown below and did the work, added an ebony forend tip, Niedner steel grip plate, sling swivels, checkered it and bedded it. It turned out pretty nice, I think.

It's been hunted with several times- the one on the right was built by the same guys- it's an 03-A3 in 30-06 with peep sight. I haven't hunted with it yet, though :>)

Not really. I found a deal on the barreled action and the wood for the 257. The 30-06 was a "spec" gun he just built to try out one. Both were priced very reasonably.......
