so my friend has a creek behind his house and every time we go back there to explore we see tons of snakes... so i wanna go snake hunting and i dont know how its normally done. my plan is just to set traps for rats (and if we dont catch any, just pick one up at petsmart) then tie it to a post, get the pellet gun and wait... good idea? how long would it take for a snake to show up?

Thats easy..big sharp ax,1 friend he leads way with rat tied on short stick, When grass moves, He jumps an screams that diverts the snakes attention,You start swingin the ax.. IF the jump isnt high enough to swing under ,just chop easy like at his toes then he will get high enough for you to swing an follow thru. IF dont find any just poke him in thigh with a sharp stick,,thats worth walk anyway.

Well if you see them all over the place...why must you try and bait them? I mean, just walk in there with protectors over your legs and blast away!

it would take a little while for a snake to show up. If the area usually floods and there is junk built up around the bases of the trees..take a rake and pull that junk back and you should be able to quickly find a snake or two. When you are successful, please feel free to show us the results (and title the thread "Hey TxKiller")

What you need to do is go to a pet store where they sell the rats and ask them to save the rat urine for you. After you get about 3 or 4 pints, you and your buddy wipe it all over yourselves, heavy. Go to the area where you think tHe snakes are and belly in. Belly all around the area. When the snake appears reach out carefully and thump him on the head with your forefinger. This will temporarily incapacitate him. Gingerly pick him up and put him in a potatoe sack which you need to tie around your neck. Continue bellying. You should catch tons. HAVE FUN!!

Indian corn... snakes really seem to like it and stay at the feeder longer!
But seriously, snake hunting is done by just gettin out and looking for snakes, around rocks, logs, and in around and under junk piles and wood piles, hay barns ect... You're basically looking for places rats and mice would be, snakes hang out there waiting for them. I've never heard of anyone baiting them... even when they trap them they just build a fence that guide the snake into the trap... no bait.

I hunt snakes and have for 30 years. First you need to be able to identify what they are. I would get a snake hook or better yet tongs if you plan on picking them up. Most are harmless but the ones that are not will give you a nasty medical bill. Baiting wont work. Look under stuff and you will find them.
