I have a 7 year old daughter that needs some snakeboots, but I dont know where to find some in her size. We saw two good size rattlers last weekend at the lease in Quanah. Any suggestions??

Thought I saw some ladies/youth snake boots at the Bass pro shop last week. Problem with a kiddo thats on the small side, is part of the trick of a good snake boot is it comes up higher than the normal strike. The snake boots I wear would probably come past your daughter's knees (unless she's a tall cowgirl too...).

Snakesboots.com has kids boots

You might check out the different size guards they carry as well. Quanah is by far the snakiest place that I have ever been.

Ve found that the snakeboots are good thru thick brush too. I hunted in dryden tx once and the dog pairs were crazy and riding up till i got the snakeboots on!

I bought my son some small gators. They work better than boots since they are still growing so fast. he goes thru shoes like mad. Couldn't be luck enough for a pair of boots to last even 2 seasons.

BTW, the gators are the only thing that I can put on him to slow him down. wink

Gaitors or chaps

TX Proud - you are right about the chaps - good catch. I was just thinking about the fact that either way, a small kid needs protection up to mid thigh and chaps would give that. I guess you could cut them down??

tough thing is whats the normal strike height? My pinnacle snake boots are 15" high I dont know if thats tall enough really. confused2

IMO go with the gaiters they grow as your kiddos grow. up

The gaitors on my son go past his knees by atleast 5". They are the same height as my snakeboots, but are gaitors for him.

The normal snake strike all depends on the size of the snake. I sure how we never see one like guys have told me about on South Texas ranches. Heard some are atleast 6' or more. hear they can strike up to half their body length. If so, well...... the boots aren't gonna be high enough. smile

since kids grow fast i would say chaps would be the way to go....

i wear my snakeboots mainly for walking thru brush and briars, work great for that, will turn any thorn....goin on my 4th season with them....and they see ALOT of use

as for the snake strike height dilemma.....i always heard that a snake never strikes above the knee.....problem is everyones knee is a different height.

watched a demonstration where a guy was in a rattlesnake ring with snakeboots on, he was walking up to these rattlers (some in the 4 ft range) and more or less kicking them to strike......every snake hit him in the FOOT. never once did he have a strike about the ankle. Now I'm no snake expert, i'm sure there have been many cases where people have been struck in the calf but at least this gives you a little piece of mind.

Get her a dog! When we're out stomping around we usually have one or both fox terriers with us. On several occasions the dogs have found snakes way before we would have known they were there. In fact my brother-in-law's terrier, "Sonic", took a bite that would have ended up in my niece...Sonic's head got a bit puffy, but a couple of benadryl and he was fine...

Plus they make the vaccine for dogs and not for humans. up Cody have you ever seen a dog that has been to snake avoidance school? Its a hoot I've seen dogs come out of that class terrified of a garden hose laying in the yard. grin

They clip the fangs off of rattlers, mocassins, and whatnot then they plant them all over the place for the dogs to run into. If the dogs get too close they get a gentle reminder from the e collar. You do this enough times you have a dog that associates the sight and smell of those rattlebugs with pain! They will then warn you and avoid them at all costs. Im thinking about enrolling my lab.

Sonic never slowed down on them...he won't get himself bit but he'll dang sure go after them. He had one bayed up in the flower bed last summer, as soon as the gun went off he pounced on that thng and slung it around like a spaghetti noodle...

Got the kids snake boots at Bass Pro for my 8 yr old and would not recommend them. Gators are best in my opinion, but impossible to find. I ended up getting a cheap pair (from Academy if I remember correctly and cutting them down. Wasn't pretty but it worked.

You might try the Justin outlet in Fort Worth, we go up and get a new pair every couple of years there and they are much cheaper than Cavender's etc.. I think they do have children's sizes also.

I was going to go with the gators since she's still growing. Cause The chaps will be too hot..i used to wear chaps when I worked on a ranch and they will burn you up. But everyone is probably right on that the snakes could strike higher on her. Decisions Decisions..
