It is an awesome muzzloader and really thumps. No cleaning like black powder.
It has been really getting a bad rap because it is basically smokeless reloading. You have to use a scale and be very, very careful you do not double charge.
Anybody else try one?
Plan on wacking a bear with one this coming fall. That is the closest we have to hogs up here.

Don't own one but have always heard they are an excellent weapon.
Be sure to check the regs where you are hunting though. Some places make it illegal to use a smokeless muzzleloader.

I have a Savage .50 cal. smokeless blued barrel, laminated checkered stock. Droppped four Deer with it this year. The stock has been changed to do away with the ramrod because there was a flaw in them and caused the ramrod to hit the barrel therefore throwing off grouping. I put a 3x9-50 bushnell on mine and can group 1 1/2 -1 3/4 at 100 yds. Haven't tried to get it any better since that will kill a Deer any day.
I really want a stainless with thumbhole stock and have been thinking of selling mine to invest in the other.
You will love it more and more.

Oh yeah; if you really want to blow your mind go to Doug's Message Board. They have a section for noting but Savage Smokeless. You can learn a lot and a lot of it is really just for those that like to experiment.

Thanks Lads. Will check out Dougs. My ram road was like trying to push a noodle down the stock. I went and bought a Remington fold T-handle rod and it is in getting cut off right now.
I wish I owned a stainless model too. Got mine for a good deal as it was the older version before they changed the trigger design.

Be sure to check the regs where you are hunting though. Some places make it illegal to use a smokeless muzzleloader. Actually, I know of no regs that make the rifle illegal, only the use of smokeless powder for hunting. It works well with Pyrodex and others too. The stock has been changed to do away with the ramrod because there was a flaw in them and caused the ramrod to hit the barrel therefore throwing off grouping. I just take my ram rod out when I am at the range and during my hunt.

Lots of places are not as liberal with their policies as here.

I know Colorado has a policy of only using loose powder,no scopes or sabots, which is fine imo. In Texas it is legal to use what you want.

I was just making the distinction that in those states, the rifle itself doesn't become illegal, but the use of smokeless powder in the rifle does become illegal. The OP is in Canada.

It seems that there may be an issue with the smokeless powder and the back pressure it is creating in the Savage barrels!

It seems he was fooling around with duplex loads or forgot and double loaded. However, the truth will most likely come out.
I bought another Savage the other day. Had it shipped to me. The guy swore he cleaned it but when I pulled the breech plug powder went everywhere. Upon further inspection I found the barrel was clogged. I took my bullet remover ran it down the barrel and pulled out a bullet and sabot. It was the wrong sabot for the rifle. There are some to use and some to not use. But him swearing he cleaned the barrel; what if I had not of inspected everything and loaded it and pulled the trigger. I too would have a mangled hand. Read and follow instructions completely and you should enjoy the Savage. There are freak things that happen in and with everything.

I am looking at buying a Savage and been doing a lot of research on them. All i can say is that there is more drama , than even here (THF), over the barrell issue that is pretty interesting.
Bottom line is that you have know what you are loading, whether it is safe or not, and is there already a load down there. Savage seems to do a pretty good job of informing what is safe on their rifle.
It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

I've got one in stainless, and am thinking about selling it. Living in Kentucky, but moving back to Texas, where I can't see it getting used a whole lot. Kentucky's gun season is only two week long, you can extend it by almost two weeks with one of these!
Still, it's such a sweet shooting gun.....

I use my Savage Smokeless from Nov.3 - Jan.17 if I haven't filled my tags. Don't shoot anything else.
