About a month ago I bought a JS prey master 4 (w/remote)

We have set up about 8 times and I haven't seen a coyote yet, we have plenty on the place we hear 2 or 3 groups every evening. For sounds I've been using, yellow hammer, cotton tail, jack rabbit and even tried coyote pup in distress and K9 pup distress. We get lots of fox to come in but pass on them waiting for yotes.

Do you think they are just call smart?
IMO this ought to be about the right time of year for young dumb 1/2 grown pups and they should be easy to call.

I'm gonna try fawn in distress next time out and see what that does...

Any thoughts or ideas?

i have never used a elc. call but i have read alot about em. I have heard that if you dont call the same sound long enough that its almost a fake sound to them. I have also had a lot of heated debate about bobcats of yotes being smarter... I have almost been able to stab a bobcat but never gotten within a 200 yard shot of a yote. good luck and i think just time in the field will show you alot.

keep calling, they will come in. they won't come in as easy as fox but just keep working on it. i JUST started varmint hunting and called in 3 yotes at once first day out with my new call at like 1pm in the afternoon. came within 30 yards easy. just keep at it

Sometimes it takes a little while before you get one in. I think we average one about 4 or 5 stands around here. But we have also gone 30 something in a row without calling in a hair. You just never know what will happen. That is what keeps me coming back.

You're doing better than me. I bought the same call have used it about 10 times and haven't called in anything other than hawks and crows...not sure what I'm doing wrong, I've pretty much given up on it.

The "young dumb 1/2 grown pups and they should be easy to call" would be a lot younger and dumber around the early fall. We see/kill more of the adolescents sept-nov. because they haven't had had much time to learn on their own. By now they're basically full grown and are definitely smart enough to take care of themselves. I'd shoot the fox and hope more animals come in. Just because you shoot doesn't mean you won't call more animals.

I use the same caller and had the same experience. Thought they never were going to come in for the first time, but they finally did. If they came in everytime it would get boring anyway. I called 8 stands today and the only thing I saw come in was a fox on the 3rd stand. May have been some coyotes or bobcats out there, but they didn't get where I could see 'em.

Have patience, keep calling and stay ready. The first one will probably come in when your rifle is leaned up against a tree or you're taking a leak. cry

Odds are you have called coyotes if they are in your area. Odds are also good that they got down wind of you and busted you before you ever saw them. Set up is much more important than anything when dealing with Yotes. It took me several years to figure that out. my .02

I'm glad you replied I was thinking I killed young ones during turkey season but after your reply I remember it was dove season, so I guess I'll lay off the pup call until July or August.

Thanks everybody for the tips I'll keep after them!

I walked up one yesterday. He came around a corner of the path about 100 yards ahead of me. I saw him about a split second before he saw me. I never had a chance to even bring the gun up, and he turned and went back around the corner where I could not see him. I got off the side of the path, hid myself behind a tree, and started blowing softly on my Primos Varmint call-the orange one from Academy. Well, immediately the crows start dive bombing me, and attacking me, and making all types of racket. After about 5 minutes of the "crow assault" I quit blowing the call. The crows left shortly there after. When I got up to walk away from my spot, the coyote had moved in behind me to wind me. As I stood up, he began booking it through the bushes. He was within 30 yards of me and I never knew it because of the stupid crows. I think the calls do work, but I think the stars & planets have to align. Had I not seen that coyote I would never have thought to stop and call there.

The path I was walking on was bordered by private property on the right (cleared open pasture land), and swamp on my left.

well you are going to hate me Rick.
Yesterday, I was sitting under a tree, waiting and watching for Squirrels, .22 in hand.

Then 2 big Coyotes walked by about 60 yards away.

Put the 16x crosshairs on the first one. tracked his head, watched a bit.
then let 'em walk smile

so the trick is to go squirrel hunting. smile
