Ive been wondering if you can shoot slugs through a choke. From what I have been told so far is Mod... But I have slug barrel so I Dont really need chokes. lol

Shooting a slug out of my 12 guage maverick can I use the full choke or should I use the modified? With today's slugs, shoot whichever choke gives the best accuracy. I have heard you should NEVER shoot sabots through anything but a fully rifled slug barrel, though. Modern rifled slugs are "Foster" type and have grooves in the slug itself, giving enough room for a full choke without overstressing the barrel or the action.

my non-professional opinion would be that if you had interchangeable tubes to get a rifled tube and use that. or to use open bore or least restrictive choke. my old Mossberg-Maverick slug barrel with sights is open choke, and all the old slug barrels were open smooth bore before all the rifled barrels came along (I think)

First, find the one yours likes best from full or bigger.
Rifled chokes and barrels can be counter productive in combination with rifled slugs....
Max, a true open bore shotgun barrel for a Mossberg-Maverick would definitely be, unique.
Most slug barrels that are not rifled are Improved Cylinder which has very little constriction.

well. . . I've never measured it. . .I've shot #4's though it before and the way they spread I assumed it was open.I also figured any 18 inch rifled sight barrel wouldn't be choked.I WILL be checking with calipers as soon as I get home now that you've made me curious.

I've found that the rifled slugs shoot best out of a modified choke. I enjoy the sabots in my fully rifled barrel though. It was finiky at first. I shot a few Rem Sluggers thru it and it tamed the inconsistancy rather quickly. It also shot the Sluggers ratehr well at 50yds, but nothing like the Win Partition Golds.
The gun was a Mossberg 500 Slugster.

Mr.Richardson, the barrel reads"chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells" "made in USA" measures .720 inside muzzle,has a screwed-on ramp front,and a dovetailed Lyman-type folding rear leaf.
I didn't think it was so rare I used to see 'em at the shows all the time, but then shows now ain't whut they usta be,and I guess neither am I
I do always like to learn something new though thanks !

and P629, I've never shot a sabot slug,so I couldn't say. . . the ones I've used are the old Foster-type they've sold for years.Put one in the pump station, they work just fine like anything else, shoot a few first, see where they hit

Improved cylinder is best for this. If you cut the shotgun cartridge and remove the slug you can check your restriction quite accurately while sliding the slug through the choke. Don't forget to remove the powder from the shell upon completion, This way you can discard safely. All the chokes will restrict the slug from moving completely through but the IC has the most allowance. When in doubt buy a cheap smoothbore shotgun with no choke or choke threads(200 bucks at your local gun show). This way you don't damage yourself or your nice bird gun. You could also call the manufacturer of the weapon and they will advise.
