dryad-sister,
"The whole point of democracy is that of respect-- of which you obviously have very little, towards the opinions of those around you."
Well... my dictionary defines democracy as political control exercised by all the people, either directly or through their elected representatives. Where does 'respect' come into that? On the surface, it seems that you are the one who has a dodgy definition of what is democracy.
http://www.aceproject.org/main/english/ve/vek05b01.htmWith regards to the debate on hunting, I'm with DCHigh2008, all the way. If anything, DC wasn't rude enough towards animal rights activists. Indeed, DC may have a problem spelling the word problem - but, I support DC's hatred towards those who view animals as being more important than human beings.
I believe humans beings should have the absolute right to hunt any animal they so wish, as long as it causes no harm to other living people.
The anti-hunting brigade argue that hunting can have 'no place in a civilised society'. That might sound fair enough, but their wrong, because what they mean by 'civilised' is some sterilised society were strong passions like DC's are wrapped up tightly, and cooled.
I have a different idea about what a civilised and democratic society should be. It ought to be a society that recognises that people are responsible adults that have moral autonomy, who are able to decide for themselves what is wrong or right. Arguments in favour of anti-hunting actually undermine this basis of a civilised society.
When animals start organising their very own anti-hunting protests, only then would I want to grant them any rights - until then, I'll oppose any bans on hunting, the same way I'd protest against any other small-minded infringement of my civil liberties.
If anything, I have a little 'respect' for DC, at least DC has a strong passion for something, and shows a willingness to fight for what DC believes in - I think that's a good thing in this age of anti-politics.
