I was wondering (instead of working) what do ya'll prefer, Male or Female hunting dogs? In our group of six, we have four Males & two Females, I cant decide which I like better, they all have good & bad things. Just wanted to start a thread so ya'll would have something to do.

My experience is that male are more aggressive, females have the female issue. As far as quality I believe the males are stronger, and the females are easier to handle. I have had several really good dogs and it is close to evenly divided between males and females.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

I prefer spayed females. I started with female pointers, and never had any reason to change.

I've only had males and never hunted with female dogs. I've heard that males can get pre occupied with their hormones and may be less focused...any truth to that?

I don't think it matters. I run both and I can't tell the difference in the hunting drive or trainability. I just like going.

I like the spayed females myself. I'm not in the breeding business, and don't care for all of the MARKING isues.

I have an alpha female that is way more aggressive than most males. She is strong willed and wants to do things her way. She will run and work as hard, if not harder than many males I've seen. I have a male that is very easy going and much easier to train than my female. He just wants to please. I really don't think sex makes a difference, it's all in the individual dog.

It makes no difference. I've see phenomenal dogs on both sides.

I have all females but I think kbobjr and redboneman are correct it's about the individual. The first setter I had was a female and she was outstanding. For a while I bought into the line of thinking that females are easier to train and mature faster than males but not so much anymore.

Personally, females are my choice. It takes the males 30 minutes go get done pissing on EVERYTHING before they can start to hunt. Females go and then just hunt. Both can be great dogs. I don't see more tallent, trainability, or desire in one sex more the other. That depends on the dog.

As far as temperament and trainability, it is more about the individual dog than the gender. Invariably, I'm drawn to the dog that best suits my personality, regardless of gender (or color, for that matter.)
