Hunted all year and the best deer I have seen are still at my Lake place and not my deer lease. Anyone want to guess were my lake place is. Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

The Okihunter gets the Cigar. Pk is over run with White Tail and we have a few Axis. The only place I have seen the Axis is behind my place at Willow Beach.Willow Beach is close to the four way stop on the east side. The White tail in the pic is a dandy 8 point.Long Tines and a good spread tha goes out well away from his ears. All of these Axis deer had antlers in some form.(nubs)Its my understanding they don't all have antlers or breed at the same time.I don't know if the Axis are big but they look big to me.here is another pic of the WT. ![](http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgAjD2EVvgiRrk9qDoB8xFRFEWJva8HSx!l3xsCLf3lL2PA9UMdP*68q1EGxkNshZNF7zG0QX63svHCqqS64Jt0jpk0rFi9khdrTk0!9OW1KybTr7gjVDw/DSCF0736.JPG)

I would have guessed PK. We used to camp all the time at the state park and saw some big uns in there. We had a doe come and eat from our table with us standing about 10 feet away. Very tame in there. Cool pics.

I would have said Belton, theres no deer hunting allowed on the corp land there and there are deer everywhere, closest you can get is the northwest bank where part of fort hood borders the corp land. Some kickass deer in that part of fort hood but the red tape of getting a hunting permit is terrible.

This Axis does not look like he's all the way topped out yet but even with a few inches probably left to go he's a mid-range deer. I'd say somewhere around 24" or so. A big Axis will be 30" plus measured from the base along the main beam to the tip. He's very pretty for sure but not considered trophy class yet. I'd bet next year he'll be right there.
As far as when they have hard horns you are correct that each deer is different according to when they are born. Axis do not have a set breeding period and they reproduce year round. My brother in law has a ranch with waaaaaaaaaay tooooooooo many Axis and they have noticed that with their particular herd (been in place for over 20 years) that they have two major rutting periods (middle of Summer and middle of Winter). But, they also see the bucks breeding does throughout the year. They are beautiful animals but do not help in any way when your goal is to produce trophy Whitetails. They'll compete directly with them with by eating the most choice food source for the Whitetails and then when that source is either diminished or descimated the Axis will still not only survive but thrive on the grasses on the property where the Whitetails will starve!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Do they not allow hunting for whitetails, or no hunting period. I would think that since the axis are not considered native game animals, you could hunt them.Just curious to know the answer?

They hunt the snot out of them. They hunt them all year long and there is probably not more then 2 weekends a year that 2 or more don't hit the ground. They kill between 100 & 150 per year off of 2,000+ acres. The problem is that their herd easily has over 500 animals and is growing yearly! They feed many, many tons of protein and corn each year to sustain this herd and the Axis are rolling fat! Their Whitetails are also in good body shape but the problem is that they have not killed a Whitetail deer that scores over 140" yet on neighboring properties that have only whitetails and at best a decent management program, they are consistently taking bucks over 140" and up to 170". The large herd of Axis has decimated the natural deer browse plants on the ranch and they also consume protein like a shop vac! There's absolutely no denying that Axis meat is waaaaaay better then Whitetail, but in the same breath it is very hard to produce top quality Whitetails when you have a large population of Axis competing for the same groceries!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

They only allow a few friends and family members to hunt. They kill 99% of them theirselves. They have a huge family, he has 6 siblings + all of the nieces and nephews. I do not believe that any of them has purchased meat in the store in over 10 years other then maybe some yard bird or such! I was allowed to kill a trophy buck only because I was the reason for them to get the contract on a project they did. If not for that, I wouldn't have been allowed to shoot a buck. My deer was a bottom end trophy that is 30" tall & 28" wide with very nice tine length but only average mass. It took 6 trips to the ranch to get this deer. I probably saw an average of 50 Axis per hunt but the bigger, older deer are very wise to game with all of the shooting that goes on there. When I shot my buck he was the only one out and was making rubs. I shot and out of the canyon came 3 different groups of Axis that together numbered well over 100 animals!

I stayed at the Sandbar Getaway on PK a couple of years ago when striper fishing. The deer were like grasshoppers! Everywhere! The locals feed them bread regularly. There were a couple of bucks that were 12 pt+. People were sitting on their porch pretty much hand feeding them. I believe this causes the same problem that Westlake has in Austin. Lots of disease and problems. I have seen advertisements for land owners to take deer (adopt) from Westlake to help reduce their problem. I have been told by a whitetail breeder not to take them due to the disease and inferior genetics. I think relocation of the animals to the counties with few deer makes sense after vaccination etc..
