Need a little more information before offering up any advice.

What is your budget? Where/what do you intend to hunt? Also, remember as a beginner, you must also purchase powder measure, loading components, puller, and usually some other odds and ends.

Lots of good advice on previous posts in this thread that you might want to look thru!

CVA offers some good "starter" guns as well as a good video about getting started with black powder muzzle loaders. You can spend from $100 to over $1000 on smoke poles but generally, you can get started with a few kits such as what CVA and Traditions offer which are around $200. They include the gun, bullets, and cleaning kits.

The trend today are the "break-over" guns, but they are a little more costly. In-lines have been around for several years, are the cheapest, and lots of them for around $150.00. The most popular caliber is the 50 cal.

There are a couple of companies that offer multiple barrel guns. CVA and Thompson Center both offer interchangeable rifles with CVA a more economical choice.

Several good scopes are also available. Nikon makes the BDC for muzzle loaders, Bushnell, and Pentax also have a good line for these guns.

I currently shoot a Knight 50cal with a Pentax 3-9X50 Gameseeker and is sighted in for 200 yards!

Besides what you can find in this THF section, you can also GOOGLE and you will get a ton of good info.

You can certainly get lots of opinions here, but I am partial to Thompson Center. American made, best warranty in the industry, outstanding customer service, and best of all, quality firearms.

I personally like inlines due to ease of cleaning but that option is strictly a personal preference.

I would only consider 50 cal. 50 cal offers the widest choices in components as well as being the most available anywhere. Also, a 50 will take out any deer or hog on the planet.

If I were you, I'd look around and try to find a gently used, or if not, buy online from Midsouth Shooters, Cabelas or wherever you get the best deal. You do not have to have a FFL to order and it shipped direct to your door.

I bought a 100.00 CVA 50 cal. from Bass Pro, I have killed hogs, deer and a 5x5 Elk, you do not need an expensive one, Just get one that you can shoot well. IMO I would not put a scope on one, that takes the fun ot of it, If you want to use a scope get you a centerfire rifle.

You will want to get you an accessory box to carry with you at all times, in some cases you may pay as much for the accessories as you do for a gun. Good luck.

T/C Omega .50 cal would be a good starter one! Then you'd probably never have to upgrade to an Encore 209 .50cal! LOL

there are enough folks that use 'em you should be
able to take several shots through a few different
kinds before you invest in one.
if you keep at it,you will likely have very different
firearms and gear after a few years than when you first start.
my least expensive was a $50.00 CVA and most exp.
was a $350.00 T/C
that's been quite a few years since I bought one. . .
