Ok... so just because I could, I have trained my pup to let me set a Dorito on her nose and then on comand "get it!" toss it into the air and catch it and eat it I think its cool because not many dogs can do it and it is somewhat endeering do you think these tricks are cool or am I useing up valuable learning ability?

it's your dog do what ever. It is not going hurt her. Mine likes to give me hugs and kisses while she gets a butt and belly rub.

I taught mine to shake hands with new people on command and when they want a treat. They only use the right paw and will only shake your right hand

my 9 year old Golden has a lot of useless tricks. The one you are talking about he can do among many others. The one most people get a kick out of is how he will box with me. He is getting old and I do not do the trick much, so he has a hard time standing on his hind legs, but at one time, I used to say "Miller, let's box" and he would stand up on his hind legs with paws up and I would punch his paws and he would kind of swing back at my fists with his paws.
Other tricks: Pick a hand - two fists presented with a treat in a hand and he picks which hand with his paw.
Bang - shoot him and he dies
Sneak - he does a crawl across the floor
Speak - barks
Miller Time - tugs on the towel on the fridge door, opens door, and brings you whatever is on the first shelf. However, I could never get him to learn to close the door, so I quit doing the trick and he won't do it anymore. Back when I had roommate in college, I would do it when someone was in the kitchen and they would close the door after him.
High 5, high 10, shake, other paw, roll-over, other way (rolls over the opposite he did the first time), where's your ball (he goes and finds his tennis ball).
I am sure there are more I am not thinking of. Not to mention he has a lot of commands that aren't tricks, but usefull. Like "go potty", "go eat", "go drink", "go away", etc.
Have fun with it and useless tricks aren't really useless. They may not serve a fundamental purpose in daily life, however they serve a purpose in bonding with your dog and it challenges their brain. It's good for them and keeps them busy and happy.
Good luck, Eric W.

Good luck, Eric W. that's a very good thing! Esp. with a young pup like yours nogeese... the pup has to "learn" how to "learn" if you will... I know a guy that had a weim and just let it run around his farm. Never payed any attention to it other than food and water. That guy then gave it to another buddy when he was 1.5. That dog was literally as dumb as dirt. I tried and tried to help my buddy train the dog with just some basic OB. He just wouldn't ever get it. My buddy ended up having to give him away to someone else too. That dog was practically wild. He wasn't scared of humans or anything though.

Yukon used to 'dance' - stand up on the hind and spin (couldn't get him into a tu-tu, though);
He would run and sky for frisbees in flight on "go long";
He would bark when commanded 'speak'...
OK and my weirdo brother taught his female yellow Lab to jump up on his thigh and... when he commanded "Hannah - HUMP!"
Now THAT'S a worthless trick, but it always got a laugh!

Our dog Miley will balance food on her nose and not move until she is told to "get it". I have a friend at work who's sister has a lab that she has taught to play dead. She can point her fingers at him like two pistols and go "bang" and he'll drop like you really shot him and they say you can pick him up and he will stay limber as a dish rag until he is given the command to get up.
Isaiah 40:31 "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Wasn't my dog, but I saw a guy ask his black lab "would you rather be married or dead?" and the dog fell over and played dead right there

Taught my dog roll over among other things. Kinda cliche, but I love it.

Lab I had several years ago would sit there with a treat on her snout for a couple minutes without moving. Tell her to "get it" and she would throw it up and catch it.
I have tried that with my 2 GSPs, but they are too dang wirey, and cannot sit still long enough for it. Their noses drive them nuts.

I taught my pointer to play dead on a "bang" command, but she was so high strung, she would lie on her back and shake around. It was funny cause it looked like she was convulsing, made it look pretty realistic.

I have an 8 month old vizsla, when I ask him who's your daddy he goes straight to my husband. We still have 3 kids at home and I can tell the dog to huntem up by name an he finds the correct one.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

The only one I have taught my dog so far is "paw" so she will wave or shake hands with kids when we are on walks.
