Hello. Just curious if any one can share some info on the deer hunting in somerset. Recently aquired a 500 acre lease which looks to have potential. It's obvious there is pigs in area but haven't seen lots of signs of deer. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the THF....I would think you should have some BIG deer down south of SA, but I have never hunted Bexar County myself. Good luck!

The place is surrounded by large and small ranches. Large being 2000 acres and small being 100 acres. I figure there is nice deer around there but was hoping to get some success storys from some folks. Anyone!!

are you hunting west of hwy 16? or closer to 35 and natalia area. there is an area back there called the BLACKJACKS. some friends of mine that grew up down hwy 16 towards poteet killed many a deer in the BLACKJACKS. the brothers and their friends knew the area real well and hunted on school friends ranches. they went to school at somerset but actually lived in atascosa county. real close to the poteet isd line. but the BLACKJACKS area is between I35 and hwy 16. not much hunting pressure any longer. some people feel like the further i drive the better the deer. SOMETIMES NOT TRUE.

The place west of hwy 16 and 7 miles directley south of somerset. It is half brushy fields and half brush and black Jack oaks. Are poachers bad in this area. Also whats yalls opinion on oil production. There is wells on place and they do come out 1-2 times a month to work on them. Do u think this will affect the hunting. Land owner claims no.

If the deer are accustomed to human activity and/or pickups driving through... Many moons ago, I had the opportunity to be on the King Ranch (before deer hunting was allowed) but there wer a lot of oil field trucks coming and going. The deer were tame as cattle, and would stand and watch you drive by at 20 yards.

atascosa is AR'd, so you have to watch what you shoot.
i have family in wilson county just across the bexar county line....blackjack, sandy country, lots of sand and stickerburrs.
hunting used to be decent, subdivision sprawl made hunting unsafe.
lots of turkey around there too
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I like AR,s so that wont be an issue. Dont think this place will be unsafe. It does have some homes in area but is well surrounded by large propertys. It is definately sandy and tons of blackjacks. Is this area considered the norther tip of the golden triangle or is that a rumor. It is real red sandy soil. Thanks

I have hunted in Atascosa county for 26 years on our own place. We have had good luck with hogs, deer, varmints, quail and dove. We have killed several deer over 140 and a couple over 150. AR's came into effect this year and I am glad of it. Will keep our neighbors from shooting the smaller bucks I hope. This year was not so good due to the drought--no water in our tanks. The rains came at the wrong time....deer would not stop at the feeders. They were in search of the green stuff not the yellow!! Hogs left the country due to no water in the tanks.

About 3 years ago, my son had permission to hunt a place just south of Loop 1604 on Applewhite road. He killed a 15 pointer that grossed 172.

Just curious if the 172 was low or high fence. Good thing is the tanks held water year round on this lease. The owner pumps water to keep constant level and had water troughs in different spots. Thanks for the info guys and keep it coming.

no the area is quite a ways from the golden triangle....but can still be good hunting.
any place that routinely produces 140 in deer is a good one

The 172 was killed on a low fenced place.

Wow that's awesome to hear of a deer like that coming from that area. Sounds like he won the lottery on that one.

the first rule of trophy hunting is the hunt where they live....i've been to south texas ranches that on the surface looked great but didn't have a buck on the place that would go over 140.
I've seen some NICE bucks running around in hill country village and hollywood park, and in several parks around canyon lake.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I agree 100 percent. Not all ranches are equal in south Texas. Not expecting the world from this place just wanted to get a feel for the area. Sat evening I was able to hunt this place and seen no deer but got a 200 plus boar with my 357. It took 12 rounds only 4 hit. I know I need practice but in the dark by urself it's easy to miss. It was a blast and my heart has never beat so hard.
