I have noticed on here that a lot of people when they are talking a bout a scope use the 3x9x40 or 4x12x50

As far as I know isn't it 3-9x40 or 4-12x50

I know I'm being anal but it's something that bugs the crap out of me.

Boy you are bored (or anal)...
I always say 3x (by)9 with a 40mm objective lens
But I might use 3x9x40...
I "think" that is correct but maybe not...

I guess I could see how that bugs you, it bugs me when people say things like "Yesterday I shoot a deer"

lol, its all in how you say it. I will put 3-9x40 or 2.5-10x50 or 6.5-20x50, but I say it 3by(x)9by(x)40. I even drive a 4-4 truck.

Somebody is having a bad day. You need some cheese to go with that.

Josey Whales:
How about threedashninesmallxnotlargeXforty? You did use anal and crap in the same sentence which may be followed by some type of warning from the moderator. Hopefully you were sitting when you wrote your post. Bugs causing such issues are most likely treatable. LOL

You are correct Josey.

That one doesn't bother me as much as "410 gauge shotgun"

Thanks Vernon. If we are going to act like we are the experts on guns, then we need to use the correct terminology.

I find the 410 gauge shotgun as one of the best over all snake charmers in the US. grin

And that is the correct way. If it were 4x12x50 You could only see it at 4power and 12 power, nothing in between. That is why it says TO. It is a VARIABLE power scope, people!

I think we should start correcting everyone that uses the term "horns" instead of "antlers" when talking about Whitetails!!

Thank God not everyone around here thinks we should be perfect! rolleyes

try an ebay search with 3x9x40. you won't get much. 3-9x40 gets a lot more items.

JCB, would that Cabellas scope be enough scope for my 22x250? I have an elk hunt this fall and I am expecting some long shots.

I agree with you on that. I don't think most know the difference but realize it does not really make much of a difference when I hear it so I usually let it be.
