I don't know alot about rifle hunting, I hunt ducks mostly. I have seen alot of sks rifles for sale and most of them are pretty affordable. What do you have to say about these being used as hunting rifles for hogs and deer and to what range would they be effective?

100 yards are less, they are great. As long as it is accurate enough.

find something better.....at the very least get a NEF handi rifle and a decent scope

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I agree it isnt the best choice, but will do if the shots are going to be close range. But I imagine you could find a decent deer rifle for about the same amount of money. Watch academy for sales.

I have one and want to do some hunting with it. I would highly recommend that you get some good ammo for it. I recently started shooting Hornady out of mine and the groups tightened up considerably. They will shoot reasonable groups especially for ranges typically associated with hunting with a 30-30. But many people believe that there are better calibers than a 30-30. I'm one of them. But that doesn't mean that you can't effectively hunt with a 30-30 or an SKS. I have a friend whose daughter has killed several deer with hers. So go for it.

They are fine for deer at whatever range you can hit consistently with. I shoot hogs with the hollowpoints and it drops them. I know several people that have killed deer with them and not had any issues. Just spend some time at the range.

I'd just buy an XL7 or other cheap sub moa rifle instead of taking a chance on junk. I have an SKS and I haven't shot it in years it's so inaccurate.

Ballistically its a LOT like the 3030.... used within its limitations, its fine. Used the wrong way, its a poor choice.

Thanks for the input yall. Just wonderin'. I think that when I throw down the dough for a deer rifle it'll probably be a 270.

If at all possible go with something better. The SKS was developed by communists to wound people for as cheap as possible. 95% chance you will regret your purchase of the SKS. They are Junk!

Good choice! Can't go wrong with a .270 or 30.06.

+1 on pushing you to an inexpensive bolt action. Get a Marlin XL-7 in .270 (great gun by the way) for around $290 and something like a Nikon Prostaff and you have a much more versatile and accurate setup.

Hornady VMAX ammo in an SKS has been an awesome deer killer for me at 100 yards or less. 5 deer that went less than 10 yards including my grandsons 1st deer this past fall. My best SKS shoots 2 inch groups at 100 yards with this ammo. Junk, HARDLY. Most SKS are very well made some are exceptionally well made. Having said that, they are not a 1st choice for a deer rifle, but if you have one, you could do far worse. Much better than the Rossi single shots etc. In my most humble opinion.

Spend a little more money and get you a savage 111. Not the purdyest but you will have an accurate rifle.
