i have a 30-30 nice gun however lately i have been thinking i would like to have a similar rifle chambered in the 45lc to go with a 6 shooter. experiences with the 45lc? balistic wise what am i really giving up? what would i be gaining? should i forget it and just keep the 30-30? thanks for any input.

My grandfather has a 45lc lever gun. He hunts with it in rifle season every year in Kentucky. At his place you couldnt get any further than a 50yd shot. Ballistically I really couldnt tell you. I know hes killed alot of deer with his. On the same token ive killed alot with my 30-30. Id say unless you really just want to have the 45lc id stay with the 3030. I know the 3030 doesnt have stellar range but I cant see the 45lc even being able to do what a 3030 does. Good luck

I took a deer and a pig with my Model 94 45lc this year. Through and through shots. Less recoil than the 30-30 and loaded right, more energy at 100 yds. But I still consider it a "less than 100yd" gun. Its the one I always grab now. I love it.

I would think there is no "need" for a 45lc if you already have a 30-30.
But i am in a similar situation. I think it is just cool to have a lever gun and sidearm chambered for the same round. I want a 357 lever even though I have a 30-30.

I'd be interested to see the ballistics table that you're using. Not being a smart-a**... just curious & somewhat skeptical.

ronkaye, I'll have to look it up. I don't remember where it was right offhand. Never mind, I found it. This is an excerpt from this article. Good reading. http://leverguns.com/articles/paco/45coltlevergun.htmThe neat thing about this method is you can take the down range velocities all the way out to your longest range and compare them with the down range velocities of other rounds, calibers and see the changes compared to each other. The 45 long Colt at 100 yards has slowed to 1600 FPS and the killing level has dropped to almost KS of 63 from 79. Where the 30-30 load has dropped to 1930FPS to a KS 46 from 53.4.....that should make a few yell ‘foul...can’t be’, but it is! And from my use of these 45 loads in the field for years on large game....I can tell you it is.....! As many gunwriters have stated over the years, a 44 mag or heavy loaded 45 long Colt fired from a rifle is more powerful than a 30-30 at 100 yards....actually they are more powerful than the great 30-30, at a lot further than 100 yards.....

I prefer heavy loaded .45 colt in my Winchester 1892 to my Marlin 336 in .30-30. I reload, and if you do, or can pay to use the "+P" .45 loads, .45 colt is very effective, if not more effective than the 30-30 (like the post above said). If you don't reload, 30-30 is the way to go; hornady leverevolution has opened a whole new world of ballistics.

I agree, point452. I reload some hot 255gr and I've tried some Buffalo Bore 325 gr in the 45 in my 1894 Winnie and both leave 2 holes for blood to leak out of. The Buffalo has some serious recoil tho, considering how mild standard 45's are.

Any pistol caliber levergun cost a lot more than the 30-30's. My Winchester was $800 last year. They go up from there. the Puma's and Hartfords(same gun I think) are really good shooters and are only around $450-500. sometimes you can find a deal on a used one. 357Mag is also a really good shooter in a levergun.

It's not supposed to be an either/or thing, you can have both. Really, tell mama I said it's OK.

Both. I hate to sell anything I have. I regret it later. You WILL also.
