Is it true a semi-auto shotgun has a shorter shooting distance than a pump due to the energy it takes to automatically eject the shell?
I have not been able to find anything on this subject and I always beleived it did not matter.
Now this is all things being equal size of shell, barrel length and choke.

Possibly the gas semi-autos...as some of the gas is harnessed to cycle the bolt. But I would think the amount is neglible. Not sure though.
Shouldnt have an effect on inertia driven semi's as they use the "kick of the gun" to cycle the bolt.

when you say shooting distance, are you talking of range or bolt travel/lock time?

I wouldn'think it would be much at all, haven't had time to really think it out, but the amount of velocity loss can't be much, and that's all that could realistically affect distance...
I thought for a minute you were headed for a lock time debate

i really doubt that it matters, but i have heard the same thing. i tell you tho, when i skeet shoot, i can hit alittle further out with my pump than my semi, but i dont know if that has to do with the action of the gun, or just more experience/comfort with the pump, as its what i grew up shooting. now put a bird in front of me and i have never noticed a diffrence. hope this helps

I plastered a couple ducks/geese this year at over 50 yards with a gasser so I don't think it matters.

I don't think it makes a difference at all. A shotgun is a shotgun and isn't intended to shoot downrange like a rifle.
