It's the long barrel model, all the #'s match. good bore. I paid $150. The guy threw in a bayonet. I know, you can get the cheaper here and there, but I liked buying from a gunsmith, he said he checked the headspace, and I liked seeing the bore before I bought it.

I'm more of a bowhunter, so I thought it would be cool to have an old gun to get out every once and a while to shoot a deer or pig with...

What Armory and year?

1943 - Izhevsk armory. I looked at a few sites online that had what year certain features are specific to the armory and year, such as clips, bolts, ect, and all matched that year and place.

Make sure you hold it loosely and not really in the pocket of your shoulder. They shoot better that way. Just kidding! They pack a good wallop if not held correctly. I shoot a lot of old military stuff and I am always impressed at what guys back then were able to handle in .303, .30-06, 54r, etc. especially since they were much smaller in stature than we are today. If shooting surplus ammo it is corrosive so make sure you clean well with hot water afterwards or it will rust up quick.

Has to do with corrosive salts in the primers of old surplus ammo. You can find details on the Mosin page or just about anywhere. If you need more info just P.M. me and I will fill you in. Besides that they are fun guns to shoot, especially the carbines as the sun is going down.

A couple of swabs with Hoppes will clean out any corrosive residue. A lot of people worry about corrosive primers but if you swab your barrel a couple of time (like you should be doing to all your weapons), it's not an issue. I have a few Mosins and can attest that the only way I would spend a day shooting them was if someone was shooting at me. After 15 rounds or so, I'm ready to pack them up.

Mosin's are great guns. Corrosive ammo can be a problem, but it is not hard to clean. I have never tried the method Primitive Hunter uses but I thought I would share my method.

I got a piece of rubber tubing (not sure of the size but it is probably about 1/4") and put a funnel on the end. It looks like a miniature beer bong. I insert that into the chamber after shooting and pour a cup or two of hot water down the barrel to wash the corrosive salts out. Then I just clean normally. I also swab the bolt face with cleaning solvents to clean it as well. I use this for all of the 10-15 military surplus guns I have that use corrosive ammo and have never had any rusting issues. Also remember to wipe down the bayonet if you shoot the gun with the bayonet attached.

Also unrelated, but I feel like bragging. My father and I took my 1913 Enfield out on Saturday and put some rounds through it. Using Wolf Gold 174 grain FMJ bullets, my dad shot a five shot group that made me proud of that old gun. At 61 yards with open sites (and the Enfield sites are not easy to use) three of the shots were touching in a clover shape and could be covered with a nickel, with the other two shots about an inch away. Certainly not benchrest accuracy, but to shoot that with a 97 year old gun, using only a hasty sling for stability it made me smile.

Congrats... Hopefully yours will be somewhat accurate. Mine is good for 4-5" groups at 100yrds off sandbags. On various trips to the range I have seen a M44 that shot around an inch, and a few 91/30's that were about the same as mine, and a couple that were lucky to hit the berm. My SKS is in the "safest place to be is at point of aim" category, but that is another story.

I have yet to take my 91/30 into the wood for a pig hunt, maybe this year will be the year. It does always seem have more than it's fair share of conversation whenever a buddy is with me when the gun safe is opened.

If you (or anyone else) want to get together for a milsurp hog hunt I would be all over it.

I have been looking for one of these in the carbine version. Used to be a bunch of them around but seemed to have dryed up.

I have the carbine version with the bolt modified and a scope on it and will shoot 1 inch groups and its a great hog killer!

Yup. What's sad is that my M44 will shoot 1.5" groups at 60 yards from a kneeling position with open sights. For some reason I can't remember, I mounted a EER scope on it (didn't require bolt modification) and before I could even fire a single round, I bought two M91s; a 1916 PTG and an 1894 Chatellerault. Now they are all I shoot even though they don't shoot quite as well as the M44. More fun though.

This is all you need to see to know why Mosin carbines are awesome. This is a Model 38 shooting non-corrosive Brown Bear loads.

That has got to make getting on the next pig during a night hunt a real chore, then again if they were in a group then they are all probably still sizzlin'... Awesome flame thrower!

I think that would probably kill your night vision. You could wear sunglasses at night but then you probably couldn't see your target.

A milsurp hog hunt would be a blast! Anyone in west texas?

I am in north texas, but for the right hunt I would drive about anywhere in this beautiful state.

Good choice on picking one up! My girlfriend got me one for my 21st birthday and I absolutely love shooting it. Make sure you get a slip on buttpad, the metal plate sucks. I hit a couple things at 300 yards and it was totally usable at 100 as well. Mine is a blast to shoot

I would be willing to travel about anywhere in the state for a milsurp hog hunt. I can probably get one or both of my brothers to come along as well. If anyone is interested in going and doesn't have an old war horse to bring, I have guns that I could lend to someone for the hunt.

If anyone is interested in hunting with Mosins, Brown and Silver Bear make ammo that will knock game animals flat. The load I use is a 203 grain soft point. It lays a hurt on your shoulder, and on whatever is unlucky enough to be hit by it.

If one of the land owners or outfitters on the group would take this little milsurp hunt up. Maybe make a competition out of it. Sounds like too much fun...

I travel to San Antonio on business about once a month, I could do a hunt close to there... I was going to book one anyway for a bow hunt, but this does sound like more fun.

A new thread might be a good idea.

I could definitely do San Antonio and would be willing to haul a couple of guys from the Denton/DFW area along as well. Every year I take my FIL down to a ranch in Hondo that has cheap hog hunts. The owner is a great guy and would probably crack up to see a bunch of hogs taken with a bunch of old guns - so long as everyone was respectful of his property.
