The Remington 700 22-250 comes with a 1 in 14 twist. The Model 12 Savage come in either 1 in 9 or 1 in 12. What is the best rate for the 22-250. I would think the 1 in 9 would be better. How big of a difference does the twist rate make???

It matters a lot and depends what grain bullets you want to shoot. I would think the 1 in 12 would be most suitable as you will probaly be shooting 40-50 gr.

Don't take twist you don't need, it just makes for more barrel heat. If you plan on shooting a wide variety of bullet weights, then take the faster spin rate: it's hard to over-spin but easy to under spin.

the 1:9 will stabilize heavier bullets and i would love one to shoot 70gr pills outta my savage 22-250. However, the 1:12 will do light and medium bullets and more of a viable alternative. let us know what you get

The 1:12 is good to 55 grains. You might get by with 60 grains. After that the 1:9 would be a better choice. With that twist you can shoot heavier than 60 grains, and any lighter!

Thanks for the info...I figure I would be shooting 55 grain but If I go with the savage it would be nice to have that 1 in 9.

My Ruger No1 22-250 has a 1 in 14" twist and it will only shoot bullets under 55grains with great accuracy. I would think about how you want the rifle to preform either very flat trajectory or a heavier bullet for more ft lbs. But just in my opion on varmit calibers ft lbs never has been a consideration. I opt for minimized drop and accuracy in varmit calibers.

Actually i shoot 53 grain tsx's in my 1 in 12" twist model 70. That's my main Texas deer and hog gun, it works awesome. I have shot 260 yards at a big south texas buck that dropped! That's the longest i feel comfortable shooting even with my bigger guns. It's the velocity that does it. But if you also want a excellent all aroung bullet and federal loads it in their premium line. The 55 grain gameking boat-tail hollowpoint. That's a good all aroung bullet for varmints and deer! My buddy shoot's this bullet and is extremely accurate. I don't really see any use in anything heavier on a 22-250. You get the most velocity and instant shock kills on any animal you shoot with those 55 grains or less. By the way those federal loads are really good priced, it used to be around $18 to 21 a box at academy's and were found everywhere but lately nobody has them??????/

Hey Brother,
I would go with the 1 in 9 twist if it were me. I have a Savage .22-250 with a 1 in 12. It's very accurate, but 55 gr. is the heaviest bullet I've tried in it so far. With the 1 in 9 you can go with heavier bullets, like stated before. The reason I would rather have a little heavier bullet is to buck the, ever present, wind a little better. Of course if you're going to be doing some high volume shooting (prarie dogs) then you would want the 1 in 12 because of barrel heating.
So it boils down to what are you going to use the rifle for?
