Last Friday while in Ozona during the beginning of the last cold snap we saw several bucks actively chasing does'.We even saw one buck mounting a doe.The rancher said throughout the week he had seen the same thing. Has any one else seen this activity after the warm up of mid January?

Yes, I saw just afew days ago..A nice 8 chaseing does all over the place..Here in Central Texas...This buck was moving like a mad man running high on speed..chaseing every doe in the field..even mounted one...It was kool to watch.

When your does vastly out number your bucks, the bucks cannot get to all of them while they are in heat. That means they come back into heat the next month. You are seeing a result of this.

wouldn't suprise me... in east tx our rut tends to kick off early, yet 3rd weekend of Nov we came across two fawns that were more than a cpl days old.

So what stage of the RUT would this be ????? Their was even a buck in the same field makeing a serious scrape...Were in Feb, are we not?

If a doe does not take the 1st go around, she'll cycle about 28 days later and it is on like donkey kong again. The 'rut' in Comal county is usually mid to late October. What huners around here usually see the mid November is the secondary rut, NOT the primary one. That said, I've seen HC bucks around NB, Bulverde, Blanco, etc. chasing does as late as Feb and even saw one mature 8 point hot on a doe in mid March in Garden Ridge about 10 years ago!

Think of it this way, if you see baby fawns in August and September, when were those does bred??? Take off 6 months and that'll get you close enough! A buck has the ability to bread as long as he has a hardened antler on his head and I've seen S TX bucks with at least one side as late as the 2nd week of April, and HC bucks as late as the last week of March.

I'm in Central texas as well, (Waco area), and this week also noticed the same thing. There was a "cute" 8 point chasing 6 does very heavily, harder than I ever saw during season. I looked across the field and saw a young spike mounting a mature doe. As we are covered up with does, I could see the logic in this theory...

When bucks cast their antlers, they have a slight pulse of testosterone which is needed to cast. This explains why you're seeing bucks rubbing and "rutting" around. Happens every year, nothing out of the ordinary

Didn't you say you normally watch 20+ doe being chased by a buck and you don't shoot the does? Sounds like an issue of having way too many does. Why do you not shoot them?
