If I am hog hunting with a shotgun do I legally have to have the plug in?

Why would you not have a choke in?
are you talking about your plug?

If you shoot your gun without a choke in, you could mess up your choke threads.

I think he is wondering if he can take the plug out of his gun to hold more shells.

No, an open cylinder is when you screw in a cylinder choke tube, shooting without anything is just screwing your gun up.

The answer to your questyion is NO, but the smart play is to have a choke in to protect the threads in the barrel.
Not trying to be a smart arse here but the best thing any of us can do when in doubt is to read the Outdoor Annual.

HaHa, I knew it. I can't answer your original question though. My guess would be you can pull the plug. About the only thing that requires a plug is migratory birds.

The answer is still no.
Have you ever considered reading the OutDoor Annual?

The plug only has to be in when hunting migratory game birds. The only thing I have seen referring to hogs is that you must have a valid hunting license and the landowners permission.

You're ok to take it out.

I have read more than once but it leaves a lot of stuff open for discussion. I know that it says that you have to leave the plug in for migratory birds. But I dont feel like assuming its ok to take it out for hogs and then get a ticket from our game warden.

Yeah the reason I am wanting to know about the plug thing is at my wife's family property the trees are pretty thick in spots and I tend to get fairly close to the pigs at times and its a SOB when you are sitting there with 15 pigs and have a bolt action rifle. My 12 gauge with about 6 rounds of 00 buck would do the job nicely I believe. I have a Semiauto 223 or 308 on my wish list but the wife is saying other things come before a $1500 gun..LOL!!! But thats why I do side jobs...

Use a double or single barrell and dont worry:)
I dont even own a plug for my dedicated pig gun. (870 with smooth bore slug barrel.) I load 4+1 of slugs and oo buck.
Have seen guys with mag extensions and thought about it myself. Seems a bit heavier than I want however.
All my dove and duck guns are either O/U or have plugs in them all the time.
It ain't easy being me.

No plug needed for piggies. Buckshot at close range will require a skinning party!

Yeah at this point they have the pasture so torn up I dont care if they get eaten or not. I went to get a pig out of the trap after 2 days of rain and when I started to go out to the pasture where she was I see 4 sows and about 15 babies. I got within 20feet. That 12 gauge would have been perfect. The darn pigs tend not to be to scared of my 4 wheeler for some reason. Thats 2 times I have gotten that close to a group of pigs in a week.

But thats why I do side jobs... I regulary shoot them from bow stands @ 10-15 yard with a 12ga and 3 1/2 #4 turkey loads and a cylinder choke. Its not uncommon for for me to kill 6-8 at a time this way!
