Was wondering if anybody here loads Sierra 100 gr spitszers with IMR 4350 and if so what kind of results have you had.
I just loaded that bullet with IMR 3031. Results were pretty poor. 1 1/2 groups best of all groups. I started at 33 gr and worked up to 35 gr in .5 increments.
I'm shooting a Rem 700 with a 1 in 9 1/8 twist. I think that twist should stabilize 100 gr easily. So I'm assuming it was my choice in powders that caused the poor results.

I actually load 32 grains of Varget under Nosler 100 gr. Solid Base (SPFB) bullets in my .243 and get one-hole groups repeatedly. I can literally set up spent shell casings on the wood for the targets and shoot the heads of the cases from the bench @ 100 yards. I get the same results using 35 grains of Varget under a 90 grain Nosler Ballistic tip.
I shoot a Savage 12FV though and asking for that kind of accuracy from a Remington is a fairly tall order. If it matters, I also own a Remington 6MM with the 1:9" twist rate, and it is not even remotely close to being as accurate as the Savage. If I get a 1" group with the Remington, I'm very pleased. I've tried many different bullets, powder charges, seating depths, brass prep-but that gun will not shoot better than an inch or more at 100 yards. I've resigned myself that this is the best this Remington will do. If I need to shoot a .243/6mm ACCURATELY, I simply pull the Savage out of the safe and have confidence that I can shoot the eye of a hog @ 100+ yards if I need to.
I have friends who claim Remington is the best there is. I guess I just don't have the luck to come across the ones that are as accurate as the Savages.

I also use Varget but a little stiffer dose. Winchester brass and 36.5gr of Varget with 100gr Sierra Boattails. It also shoots well with the same set up but using 42.5gr of RL-22.

My load data is out in the shop and it is way to cold to go look it up.. Sierra 100gr BTSP and IMR 4350, 40-42gr I'm thinking, in my Tikka Whitetail Hunter... Getting less than an Inch @ 100yds. Don't quote me or rush out and try it without looking it up in a load manual I also use IMR 4064 with the Sierra 80gr BTSP "Blitz" Varmit bullet When I use up all my IMR powders I will try som H4350SSC and H414, for heavier bullets and Varget and ?? for lighter bullets...Maybe some RL powders too

30378-yeah I agree the charge I'm using is not calling out the fire department, but I'm predominantly an East Texas woods hunter and rarely see shots more than 100 yards, so accuracy is more important than speed.
I've never run it over a chrono to see how fast it's moving. When I was going through load development, I started at the min. and quickly found bug-hole accuracy. I stopped at that point as I did not see any need to go further. I'd be willing to bet that this Savage would still shoot accurately if I went faster though. Just don't have the need. It's not like 6MM bullets are known for being tough anyway so I'd like to think I'm not handicapping myself by pushing them to Mach 7. Plus, my brass should last a LLLLLLOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG time with the loads I'm using right now.

I am more of a fan of the Nosler BT. But that is neither here nor there. What I would recommend most definintely is to go to a faster burning powder. EX. IMR 4895. You want your powder to burn up before it exits the barrel. You don't get the full effect of your powder and is wasteful if it is burning after it gets out of the barrel. Give that a try and I think your accuracy will improve also.

I've got the same Rem 700 you have and have been using Sierras 100 gr BTSPs with 40 gr of IMR 4831 for several years. It groups between .5 and .75. Note I seated the bullets out as far as I could and still get it to feed without damage. The chart I use shows 4350 is a little faster than 4831 but not a lot. Anyway the gun will do it, you just have to figure out what it likes and a slower powder than 3031 should help. BTW, what's this load for?

Deer and hogs. I used IMR 4350 (40.1 gr.) and got down just under an inch using Federal brass and Winchester primers. Thats with the bullet seated at 2.710 overall.

Hey thanks for the info. My buddy and I are going to Cabelas tomorrow. I'll see if they have any IMR 4831 this time.

I use Nosler 95 gr. Ballistic Tips. And push them with IMR 4895. Try a faster burning powder with the smaller bullets. You will be amazed at the results. Slower burning powder is still burning after it exits the barrel. My .243 is literally a TACK driver. Before Nosler made a 115 gr. BT for the .25 Caliber I loaded the 100 gr. BT with IMR 4895 and it is the most accurate my .257 Roberts has shot. I even thinking of going back to the 100 gr. in it.

Sorry I didn't see this post earlier. I use IMR 4350 with the 100 gr Sierra boat tail spitzer and have had good luck with 41 grains. The groups were tight, .6 inches. They all looked pretty good +/- 0.5 gr. I was shooting a 700 adl. Real happy with the performance on deer. Nice exit wound and an axis doe DRT. Have fun. I want to play with the 85 gr TSX next. 870Fan

Thanks 870 Fan. I'm going to have to stick with IMR 4350 because there is no IMR 4831 or IMR4895 to be found in my area.

I used Sierra 100gr Game King BTSP's many years ago in my .243 Win. It was a Ruger M77 (old tang safety) and it shot really good considering I was a kid back then. I used H4831 and Win primers. I shot it so much I burnt the barrel out. I got rid of it at a shop and bought a different caliber. I wish I still had that rifle and just rebarreled it instead. Like I said I was young then. I killed a lot of northern deer with it. I was disappointed w/ the bullet performance over 100yds though. I think a 95gr bullet is better if the rifle will group them in the .243 Win. I have a 6MM and use a 85gr Sierra Varminter bullet in it. I'm using H4831 and Win primers also. I get huge holes and most of the time the bullet exits. There have been only a few times that the bullet didn't exit and they were close range shots in the shoulder. I have had pass thru shots on the northern deer from 100yds out to 200yds thru the shoulder. It all depends on the velocity IMO for the Varminter bullets. I think the Nosler BT's would be too soft and make a lot of damage, but I've never tried them in the .243 cal. So, it depends on the entrance and exit holes along w/ the size of the wound channel you desire. Have you tried any other bullet weights in the Sierra or other manufacturers?

No not yet, I will load some Nosler partitians this summer. I shot a buck at 230 yds with a Hornady 100 gr. BTSP factory load and it performed exceptionally well(nice exit) I will probably try that next.
