51 buffalo were killed and left to rot in the pasture in King County. The estimated value is $280,000 for the buffalo. Sounds like an adjacent landowner did not want them on his property, so he slaughtered them. http://everythinglubbock.com/content/fulltext/?cid=47491

I'll bet it ends up costing way more than 280,000.00.

that is so sad, i wonder if there is more to the story like a history between the two land owners... My guess is this isn't the first time the bison got on his property. While I don't condone shooting them, if they hadn't got on the man's property he wouldn't have shot them. Knowing what bison are capable of, they might have busted his fences up too.

I'd like to know who the adjacent landowner is. I probably know him. I've spent a lot of time on the QB Ranch when it was still the 6666's. I'll have to keep up with this one.

that is so sad, i wonder if there is more to the story like a history between the two land owners... I have seen similar carp happen when it is between relatives. It was one of my first thoughts but the from the article it did not sound that way.

It is always sad when animals have to pay the price, which in this case was the ultimate price, for something that humans cannot work out. If you do the same thing with 1 dog, the SPCA will get involved, so it looks like with 51 buffalo, they would really be willing to jump on that.

That really is aweful. The shooter outta pay dearly for it.
Let me play devil's advocate though. If it were 51 domestic pigs off a neighbors ranch would the feeling be different? I kinda think so. "We'll they are feral now".

What would you do if the buffalo had gone through fences numerous times in the past and entered you ranch. Each time you had to pay to repair all the damage they caused to your property only to have it happen over and over again. Just think about the damage a herd of 51 buffalo can do. I've seen the damage from one escaped buffalo, I can only imagine what 51 would do.
I'd also love to see you go try to roundup 51 free ranging buffalo.
I don't blame the guy one bit for shooting them. I do agree that more could have been done to salvage the meat.

QB owner lives in Dallas area. This could cause a lot of problems for neighbors if ranch is not managed and ran properly. Fences are a constant battle anywhere, and this is some extremely rough country. Good fences make good neighbors. Loose livestock start range wars.

Personally don't know if I would of shot them or not, I may have and may not of. Depends on how well the sheriff office was at sticking it back to the buffulo owner.

I don't blame the guy one bit for shooting them. I do agree that more could have been done to salvage the meat. That is the answer, just shoot them. No matter if it is human trespassers or pigs or buffaloes, just shoot them and that will solve it. For some strange reason, I do not think shooting them is going to solve anything. I would bet that it leads to a few more problems. Want to bet?

Stop being a douche. Nobody said anything about shooting human trespassers. Shooting them took care of the "damage to his property" problem that apparently hasn't been addressed any other time these things escaped. I think the buffalo owners plans of taking legal action will backfire on him. When its all said and done and there turns out to be even more buffalo on multiple ranches surrounding his place causing significant damage he will be responsible. If my dog gets out of my yard and kills your dog in your yard, I am responsible. If my livestock gets off of my property and causes damage to your property, I am responsible. I'd be willing to bet the buffalo owner has not repaired a single fence that these buffalo have damaged other than the ones on his property. But then again I only know what I've read, but have seen similar problems in other areas of the country so this is all speculation.

We've got some buff's on our place. It takes a serious fence to keep them home. If you're going to own them you have to put the money in a good 5 or even 6 strand fence.
That said.. can't condone the guy that shot them. What a waste of resources.

With only 51 dead out of 120, I can't see that it has taken care of the problem. I expect sometime, the others will want to get over on the same ranch as the shooter, Buffalo Bill Killer Cody. I am sure the answer lies somewhere in between, but I cannot see someone shooting 51 buffalo and wasting all of that meat getting away without any type of punishment. Should the owner of the buffaloes have to pay for the damages? Yes and he should be expected to have good enough fences to keep the buffalo in. What is this douche deal you are talking about? Is it sort of like when you trade barbs and you say touche', but you misspelled it?

Here is another link with more info about the QB ranch. It appears that this is a high fence operation. I kind of doubt if the fences are of poor quality, and they probably been kept in pretty good shape. One doesn't invest in this kind of layout and then let the animals roam around the country. Maybe a whizzed off neighbor about the high fence is the problem? http://www.qbranchtx.com/index.phpThis will cover the fence and estray requirements in Texas http://www.thecattlemanmagazine.com/livestock_laws_Texas_cattle_tscra.asp#Sec. 142.0021. I had a friend whose wife liked to buy him different animals for Xmas. One year she told me that she was going to get a couple of buffalo. I tried my best to talk her out of it because I new their fences would not hold up. Well she bought them anyway and the bull got out. They found him about 8 miles down the road and he killed a horse when they tried to get him in to a trailer. Those were 2 expensive buffaloes. I would think that you would have steel pipe for fence if you have buffaloes.
