Two men duck hunting early this morning. Something happened and one of the guns went off shooting the other, news said he was pronounced dead at the scene. No names so far but my prayers go out to the family.

That just sucks. I can't imagine what everyone involved is going through.

Please remember to be careful, guys. I've had one close call when a group of teal came by, and my buddy stood up unexpectly to swing through. Only rung his ears, but things could have gone differently. I'm sure many of you have had similar close calls. It's not worth even getting close for a duck. Make sure that everyone you bring with you knows where the line is, can't tellyou how many times I've had to tell people with me to scoot up or slide back so everyone is safe.

My dog snores.

Im sure most of you have read the news story on this accident...I dont think exact details of how it happend need to be shared....But we were hunting real close to where this accident happend, and saw them and the gw's as they were headed to the ramp. I just pray for the man who lost his hunting partner.

I would think that some may learn from this if a few more of the details came out on how this happened. Prays out to all those involved.

Agreed. Safety has to be our top priority. I was in the field in Katy Texas when a few hundred yards away on December 22, 2007, a similar accident occurred. One hunter stood up a second next to him swung on a group and accidently shooting and killing him. Lifeflight came to the scene and when the propellers spun down it was a very sad moment.

It only takes a moment to change things forever. Prayers to those involved, that is very sad.

Here's another one:

Matt Jansen, a 30-year-old man from Houston, was shot and killed Sunday morning, Jan. 17 by his hunting partner in what has been ruled a tragic accident. The accident occurred on the Salt Bayou Unit of TPWD’s J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area shortly after legal shooting time began Sunday morning. The incident was ruled by a Jefferson County Justice of the Peace as accidental and no charges have been filed. Department game wardens and Wildlife Division staff worked with the Jefferson County sheriff’s office to respond to and investigate the incident. Investigators and staff involved say Jansen’s partner swung on a flock of ducks outside a safe zone of fire. Although the number of hunting incidents is low compared to similar outdoor pursuits, and the rate of hunting accidents in Texas continues to decline, swinging on game outside a safe zone of fire remains one of the most common accident causes. Hunter safety experts say two or more hunters in a stationary blind should establish and communicate their safe zones of fire prior to shooting and stick to their safe zones while shooting. Experts say observation of the “safe zone” rule would eliminate a quarter to a third of all hunting incidents in Texas each year.

Be careful out there!

I happen to know the family of the young man that shot his friend. Everyone is heart broken over this. It is my understanding that Matt just had a new baby. This is so incredibly sad. I am happy to see that everyone has kept this thread friendly and respectful. I cannot imagine the guilt this young man feels nor what he and his family have in store for them. Please keep both families in your prayers.
