my buddy sent me this pic of some birds he shot earlier this season. any guesses on what it is?

It looks like a mallard/pintail to me

No I don't think that it's very common. Usually if you go to the park you can find some hybrids though.

he shot it on the san gabriel river. its a pretty far distance from a park.

Me neither but lots of hybrids. I saw some gadwalls at a park last week.

yea its called a Pinard .... pintail x mallard .... my friends grandpa killed one a few years ago and got it mounted and DU kept it for research for almost 5 years .... the closest park like that is 60 miles but my buddy that does good taxidermykilled one the other day while hunting also and mounted it that day but both of theres are a little cooler than this .... they have more distinct feature... a brown tinted green head with the white line up it , a pintail colored beak that is mallard shaped , the green on the wing and the sprig goes out about 4 inches and curls up on the end like a curl feather they are AWESOME!!!!!

they arent "common" hybrids are rare, but as far as hybrids go, mallard/pintail is a common one. its definatly mount worthy

That is not a pintail mallard hybrid, that is a domestic crosbred, most likely a Blue Swedish or possibly Call Duck or Peking.

San Gabe is only 15 miles from a park.... Thats really not far for a duck.
