Hey HR3 have not seen you post in a while, how ya doing? I figured you know all the lavon spots by now. More water just means less walking.

I don't recommend walking in there if you don't know where you're going. The water is too high for 99.9% of the walk-in hunters out that way and quite frankly if you're not VERY familiar with the lake on a very high water year you're going to get yourself into trouble very fast. Too dangerous for the average joe IMO. Good luck, and thanks for the lake name.

HR3,
I live 15 minutes from Lavon. I used to hunt there 2-3 times a week. Unfortunately, it has become public duck hunting destination #1 in Dallas. It's a shame. I was working on my boat last Friday and I decided to run out there and do a quick afternoon hunt just for grins. I got to the ramp where I used to go a lot and there were 6 trucks and trailers there already. Six groups hunting a small area in the afternoon! I made a U-turn and went back home.

Not trying to keep you away either, but the water is way too high. I saw a ton of birds there before legal 2 weeks ago and they left at legal, probably to feed somewhere where there is actual aquatic life. I haven't found anywhere that holds shallow water and vegetation around there. Its dead.

Been walking in at Lavon this whole season. Tough. Managed a mixed bag the other day. Agree with Kdub, a ton of birds at right before legal, but all out and not returning like you would expect. Water is high and watch you don't step on too many tampon insertion plastics. other than that same ole Lavon. Need some folks to do some conservation work around that place in concert with the COE. Think we should all petition through the local DU chapter to make some changes for the betterment of the ducks and ultimately the hunting.

Our chapter (Lake Lavon Ducks Unlimited Chapter) has already talked with COE. The problem is the lake is a flood control lake. Meaning they can not guarantee the lake level to remain at a certain level for any period of time. DU won't make the investment if they don't think the new seed will either be dried up or flooded before it takes root. The area we were going to plant would have been a refuge. I've hunted that lake this year walking in, and it's been really tough with the high waters. It's a dead zone...

Like you said, on high water years for the most part it's a dead zone..unless you got the boat and the know how to get to the sweet spots...on low water years it's decent..BUT it's a full blown competition to beat the other 10,000 people who'll be out there daily because access is easy for the walk-ins.
