The problem is there is a whole generation that did not hunt ducks. I grew up in a non-hunting family, and I learned duck hunting on my own, I don’t see that as an excuse. I learned real fast as a newb if you want to kill ducks, you have to work for it and scout. Now I did grow up in a family that believed in hard work and “pull your own weight” mentality, I threw paper rout as a kid, mowed lawns, washed dishes at local restaurant thru the 9th grade, and then I started roofing housing. The problem is that we have a generation of kids that don’t know what hard work is, they were born with video games and PCs in their face and afraid to break a sweat!! What?? Wake up early?? Have a plan B and C???

I grew up hunting deer, dove and quail. My dad did not teach me to hunt waterfowl.
I have walked in on guys using a boat right in the spot I was going and I just sat up in the treeline and watched since walking any farther was impossible due to mud. It is a matter of knowing what is right from wrong, respect and good sportsmanship.

Thought this was a good one to bring back up...some of the respones in here probably highlight the same reason we are seeing the rash of pics posted by guys who have no clue.
I think that in addition to kiss my [censored] and the generation and 1/2 missing out are true, but combine that with the media we see today, the videos and internet that show us how cool you can be with a limit and the instant gratification needs of young uns and here you are...
Nobody wants to scout and put time in, they want to show up at first light and shoot ducks then go home and take a nap. That is not what hunting used to be about...

Im 23 years old and started duck hunting when i was 16, so this whole "blame it on the young guys" attitude kinda sends me over the edge. I didnt come from a family that had a lease or land or any of those so i was forced to hunt public. I put in the time scouted, found the birds and week after week i had good hunts. i can tell you in the time i hunted public i had just as many "barneys" that were older guys "locals to the territory" if you will that behaved in such a way everybody is talking about as i did young guys. so i understand what you say about the generational duck hunting thing and how it would make sense to guys that complaining but IMO this is due to overcrowding. i know of 2 spots i used to hunt that are illegal to hunt now due to houses going up around it. this is due to an influx of hunters and an adverse shortage of quality public land to hunt. Not age, not experience just simple overcrowding of huntable land and sorry run of the mill public lakes to hunt. thats my .2

A lot of the blame is cast that way but the truth of the matter is it's how they are taught!! I am utterly amazed every day at the number of 40 to 50 year old that don't have a lick of sense. These same people are raising kids that don't have a snow ball's chance in hell of having sense God gave a goose. It's all in the up-bringins. I was very fortunate to be raised by common sense parents who still believed in you get what you earn. Thankfully they taught me well. I am only 32 but sometimes I feel old because of the ignorance I am surrounded by. We will never have "the good ole days" back. What we have is what we have and it's up to us to make the best of it. There are still bright spots ahead if we are willing to seek them. Barney or no, gotta get out there and work harder than the rest. It's the same with anything you do in life. Most are too weak and seek too quick of gratification to put in the time, effort and sweat. I will and I feel like as long as I keep pushing, I will find the motherload.

A generation and a half since major duck hunting...that means for 15 years we haven't been trained in the ethics. You could be 40+ and still easily fall into the void described above. If you have ethics great, I think I do as well and we aren't the problem, in fact we are the solution.

I agree the overcrowding part. Everybody wants to hunt a public lake that only has a certain amount of places to hunt. No reason to give all us youngsters a bad name due to the ignorance of a few.

Interesting topic.
In 1982, there were about 140,000 Federal Duck stamps sold in Texas.
In 2003 (the most recent year I could find data on), there were about 140,000 Federal Duck stamps sold in Texas.
Granted, there were declines in duck hunter numbers in the late 80's until the mid 90's when the numbers began to rise again. The peak was 149,000 in 2001 and the decline began again.
It appears that the number of hunters is not the problem. It is the mentality of our society in general. There are far more rude people in the world than there were back in the 80's.
Age is probably not a main factor either. Chances are very good that the inconsiderate duck hunter in his 50's has passed on that mentality to his 20 year old son.
Maybe it is the internet. Back in the day, if we had problems with someone setting up too close, it got settled in the marsh. And no one on the non-existent internet world knew about it.
I do not know the problem but things have changed a lot. I would be willing to bet that the main cause of the problem is the limit. A typical hunter who averages 3 ducks per hunt is having a pretty good year. And that was the limit for many years.
Maybe the quest for the "extra" 3 ducks per day is the cause of the problem....

I thought the same thing. we are so quick to judge someone before knowing anything. That guy who showed up late could have been an EMT that just worked a double to work on a cousin of yours. Or maybe he helped someone broke down on the way. All that calling he was doing was because he saw birds. My partner got the word Barney from here and its getting as old as IBTL.

Interesting. I would have never guessed those numbers.

Easy way to fix it is to have the COE on these public lakes start a lottery of who can be where and when. Then it seems there will be less people to be out and about to bitch about each other. I agree with a previous post...it's what our society has become. I'm 43 and my hunting buddy took some time at the end of our hunt on Public the other morning to talk to a few college kids looking to enjoy duck hunting, and we gave away all our secrets... Who cares...we'll all be dead in few years anyway.

The term Barney and Gomer & Guber have been around since the internet started.. I started out on the DU board. Was on the first one with "Cappy" and a few other that are one here.. I will tell ya this : Du is on its third Forum board..been on all 3 of them..There are 7 dudes on there that are the original - Team Barney - ..it got so comical on the DU board that do to me and a few others- you can not even type the word Barney on the forum..it kicks it out..To funny..Robby got down on that one!!
There will always be Barney...at one time-think about it..we were all Barney in one way or the other..when you start duck hunting at 7 yoa..your gonna do some barney thing..but damn -we all try to correct them faults --right...well NOT Barney..Barney just drives on doing his own thing and has the attitude of-- to hell with everybody else..
After 17,000 Visits and Post on the DU board..I had to recently let that board go..Its down right comical over there.. ________________________________________________________________ Then theres the way the Upper Admin handled the Don Young matter..not good !! The final straw for me was the Cap & Trade issue...the person that handled these TWO issues...HE is the REAL BARNEY amoung us!!
IT'S NOT THE GUN - IT'S THE PERSON BEHIND THE GUN!

Who came up with the term Barney?
it sounds silly.
I don't think I could ever say it out loud. We call them rubberheads where I'm from.
