I've read about this and I think I have even asked this question a few times back, but for the life of me, I've never found anything at the large lake near DFW that I hunt that looked like the food sources I've read about. When the hunting is slow (which is always for me), I like to walk/drive around and scout new spots, and I try to look for different kinds of vegetation that ducks could eat, but I don't think I've ever actually seen any.
Is there food there that I'm just not recognizing? If no, maybe that's why I'm also not seeing many ducks...
Also, would it take an act of congress to make some improvements to the duck food sources on certain lakes? The lake I have in mind is controlled by the Core of Engineers, but has anyone ever talked to a public lake authority about something like that?

I have been thinking the same thing...I don't see what I would call food sources which is probably why I don't see many ducks.
There have to be a few holes out there that DO have food sources which is why some guys can find and kill a decent amount of ducks (at this point decent can be from 2 to 6, or 7 for some people ;)). That is why you just have to keep looking.
Everyone says when you find the ducks that is where you hunt, so keep looking till you find the ducks. I will be doing the same!

Lets see lakes around Dallas thats easy.....they eat bottle caps, dirty needles, sanitary napkins, band aids, and all of this is done in non-potable "recycled people water". Just a guess.

providing food sources for migrating waterfowl in the DFW area is illegal. We Houstonians outlawed it so that more ducks bypass the DFW area and head down here!

I think at some of the lakes around here that the ducks roost and then head out to nearby ponds and creeks to feed. One of the lakes In particular that I hunt is dead, its waist deep in the normal soulghs and the only vegetation is the algae that grows on the dead bushes. I have seen lots of ducks there before legal, and then they head out, so that is what makes me think they are feeding elsewhere.

I had a gadwall hen swim into the deeks floating on a used inflated Prophylactic using it like one of those noodles you get at wal mart...

Exactly. Ducks go where they go. They will tell you what they are eating by where they are, just gotta look. Find the ducks first.

you are on the right track and looking at what you need to look for. your question can be answered several ways but first i would pin down what type of birds you are targeting. when i was in denton there was alot of agriculture around several close by lakes and those certain agriculture fields closest to decent water always allowed me to have great seasons. you'll find em , follow the little blue lines on maps towards the local ag product that your research has shown they will eat. good luck
