Black-eyed peas

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We always grew a pea patch when I was growing up. There are many verities of field peas. I think ours were mixed. You had your purplehulls, your whippoorwills, and black-eyed peas. We started snapping them before they matured, then we would shell some of them and add snaps. I think you can buy them in a can with snaps now days. Quail would flock the pea patch. I remember seeing quail chicks running while mowing the peas for hay.

I still like them, but they're not necessarily traditional for me on Thanksgiving day. I'll probably open a can for dinner, and have them as a side dish with my shrimp/sausage Creole, along with some boudin my Louisiana neighbor gave me. My daughter came home for Christmas. She only stayed one night, so she never checked a bag for the flight home. She brought a wine box in which to take some chow-chow home for her New Years black-eyed peas. She had to check it, cause you can't take glass on the plane anymore. I added a jar of homemade salsa. You can put salsa, and cilantro in black-eyed peas, then use it as a dip with Tostitos.

Are you planning black-eyed peas for New Years?

Gotta have the peas on New Years and you can't beat cornbread made in a cast iron skillet.

Southern tradition!

I like black eyed peas alright, but I like cream peas a lot better.

fried backstrap
mashed potatoes with cream gravy made from the pan drippings
cabbage seasoned liberally with sweet onion & smoked venison sausage
peas seasoned with the more of the same sausage & onions
hot water cornbread

Maybe some sweet tea to wash it all down?

Blackeyed peas on New Years Day have been a tradition in my family ever since I can remember. Well over 60 years, I remember my grandmother telling a story about how she learned about the tradition when she was a child. That makes it a tradition for over 120 year in our family. Our family has had pretty good luck, so it will happen again this year.
