yes, still making rifles. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they were bought by FN. Supposedly now the best they have ever been as far as accuracy.

Olin owns the rights to the name Winchester. They have a new licensing contract with FN. The new Model 70s (at least) are made at an FN plant in South Carolina. They have a website: Winchester Guns

The new Model 70 should be a great gun, and it is made in the good ole USA...

I think "still" should be "again". Not the same old Winchester... Yes, I stand corrected. I knew that, just wasn't thinking about it at the time. Not the same old Winchester, but that's not necessarily terrible. They do say that the old Winchesters (way back there) might not have been as precisely made as today's computer aided manufacturing, but the bluing was superior to what is used today.

The new Model 70's reportedly have the "Pre-1964" trigger design. However, I remember reading a review in one of the outdoor rags that claimed the accuracy is below what you can expect in other, mass-produced rifles. Based on what I've read, Remington still seems to hold the #1 position when it comes to out-of-the-box accuracy. While I cannot provide first-hand evidence of this against Winchester, I know my Remington ADL is more accurate than my more expensive Browning.

The new Model 70's do not have the pre-64 trigger design. They have a totally new trigger design that is new to Winchester. The pre-64 design was in all Model 70's up to the making of the new ones by FN.
Also, everything that I have read about accuracy is that the Model 70 is on par with anything out of the box, including Remington.

I have heard the new ones were accurate but no personal experience as I don't like Mauser style actions.

This month's American Rifleman has a run down on all the different incarnations of the Model 70, and the accuracy thereof.

Winchester has had great guns and finishes over the years.
Out of the box, you can't beat a Savage for a production line gun in the accuracy department. We sell them all, set-up ad sight in all of them for customers, and I still wouldn't trade a Savage for a Remmy, Browning or whatever out of the box.... unless of course the money was right.
ALL OF THEM.....will outshoot most shooters

I have heard the new ones were accurate but no personal experience as I don't like Mauser style actions. +1.....if they had a 60 degree bolt-throw I'd buy one in a heart beat.....I love my A-bolt Growing up my dad shot a Winchester Featherweight in .270 and he sold it a few years ago. I wish he didn't now because I'd like to buy it. Oh well.....I might just have to get one of the new ones. I'd love to get a custom Featherweight in .264 Win with a stainless barrel.....but I'm affraid it would be a pain in the a$$ to find ammo.

AMEN! For the price, you can't beat a Savage. There are actually a heck of a bargain. I am very happy with my .270 and my .30-'06.

This month's American Rifleman has a run down on all the different incarnations of the Model 70, and the accuracy thereof. That's where I read about the older ones being as accurate as the newer ones. The ammo back then WAS the problem.....not the rifles. I never owned a Winchester due to the control feed. I like my Rem's, Tikka and Brownings, but love my Encore!

Most of the bench rest shooters rifles are on model 700 actions.

I saw a show on TV a few weeks ago about Winchester rifles. It was kind of like the "How it's Made" show but it was dedicated to the production of Winchester rifles. According to the show, they are made in the US but the name of the company that produces them is FN.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

I think the Remington 700's are the best shooters too! Most of the bench rest shooters rifles are on model 700 actions. But those aren't "out of the box" guns. Most are custom guns. I've always heard Savage and Weatherbys were the most accurate out of the box. But, as stated above most all of them will outshoot the shooter.

Actually I think Browning owns the Winchester brands. They have a longstanding relationship with FN and contracted them to make the rifles. The Super-x 3 shotguns are pretty much the same as a Browning gold in different clothes.
I find it ironic that the company that would not make the A5 is now owned by the company caused by the A5.
