this morning i set out on my first actual duck hunt, solo at that(well my pup was with me). done some scouting yesterday and found a spot that looked ducky to me . set up 8 decoys and tucked myself into the bushes where we sat for about an hour in the rain. LST comes and about 20 minutes in i hear some mallards calling my name. i blew back on my duck call and have absolutely no idea what i said but they flew over my spread and kept going. i sat there thinking well i am wet and cold and kinda feelin dumb. about that time i noticed they were circling back around and cupping right over my head. i let the #4's fly and a mallard was on his way down. my dog broke at the shot and was on her first retreive. i missed the other bird, but after seeing the splash i saw no reason to get greedy. after all this was my first hunt and being a newbie.it kinda quit after that and we decided to pack it in. merry christmas to everyone!

Congrats to you and the pup!!
Just a word of advise: I'd recommend breaking her from shot breaks now. She's still young and you'll be glad you did later on. I didn't and regret it still today and she's 8yrs old. She screwed up a ton of second chances at birds coming back to look for their partner.

Nice Greenhead. You need to get that dog a vest. She looks cold.
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes

headed back out in the A.M gonna see how it goes. Nice Greenhead. You need to get that dog a vest. She looks cold. i agree she needs a vest. any suggestions? i had her wrapped up in my carhart coat while we were in the bushes to keep the wind off of her. then she got a cozy ride in the back seat of the truck on the way home.

I have the Avery Boater's Parka for Charlie. It works great and has some flotation in it. It's easy to cut to fit any dog.
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes
