Do you jerk in public and private.  O.k., got that out of the system. Now seriously: How many decoys do you run on the string and why?I'll start: I have only run three for years. Two drakes and one hen because this is what I usually see in nature. Two dudes competing for the same girl. I know four or more decoys will stir up the water better but I guess I am concerned with the perfect in-line grouping being a bit out of the ordinary and flaring the birds? After this last weekend of calm water I am thinking of adding one or two more to the string and am curious what ya'll think. Go

I run three. Jerk strings are the best motion decoy IMO. I've been thinking about one of those spreader bar things, they look pretty realistic but then again im a gear junky so...

I've only recently started using one but won't be without it now. They see that motion and lock on. I only put 2 on the string more out of convenience than anything else, but they are magnum decoys. I think it puts plenty of motion out there

Looked at the Jerk-A-Spreader from Cabelas and read too many bad reviews. I like the thought of a dozed decoys moving but sounds like it was made too cheap.
Think i will go home tonight and see about making my own spreader out of coat hanger wire. Thinking this will add two more on each side for a total of seven moving decoys. (Two diamond shaped configurations with decoys on each corner.) Will put it to use on Christmas and report back.
Additionally, anyone ever use goose decoys on a jerk string? Pro's/con's?

Looked at the Jerk-A-Spreader from Cabelas and read too many bad reviews. I like the thought of a dozed decoys moving but sounds like it was made too cheap.
Think i will go home tonight and see about making my own spreader out of coat hanger wire. Thinking this will add two more on each side for a total of seven moving decoys. (Two diamond shaped configurations with decoys on each corner.) Will put it to use on Christmas and report back.
Additionally, anyone ever use goose decoys on a jerk string? Pro's/con's?
I've been using the jerk-a-spreader for three or four years. It works great. I don't know what kind of hunter would give it a bad review....

I've been using the jerk-a-spreader for three or four years. It works great. I don't know what kind of hunter would give it a bad review.... Claimed the clips were too small and too brittle. Guess they were made out of plastic? How hard/easy is it to set up? Ever have any trouble with a dog gettting tangled up in it all?

Danno ... go to Walmart and pick up a pair of fiberglass bicycle flag posts for about $5 each. Take the end bracket off. ( http://parkerflags.com/bikesafety/?gclid=CNuI2de96p4CFZAN5Qod9mYjZw ) Slip a 1/2" PVC cross over one of rods to the middle and then insert the 2nd one at a 90 degree angle though the cross and over the 1st rod. You now have a fiberglass rod cross that you can tape in place at the joint with electical tape to prevent the pieces from coming apart. There are a number of ways to attach the decoys to the rods. I like 12" black stainless swivel leaders (or spray paint flat black after) wired onto the rods and taped over. Attach the swivel snaps to a short loop from the decoys keel. The end of the rod on the shore side needs to be securely attached to your main line running back to the blind. I use a large trot line barrel swivel on each end wired on and taped over. The far end attaches to a T-post sunk into the bottom. I use main line and a 36" bungee cord for the attachment to the T-post. I couldn't get a sketch to post so if the explanation above doesn't seem clear, I'll make a drawing for you. The rods are 6' long each so you can modify the length and width of the rod as you see fit and experience teaches. At 6' it pretty cumbersome to transport so I cut mine to 4' on the cross piece and left the 6' rod for front to back.

The clips are metal loops. They can be a little tricky at first, but they're not bad. It holds 4 decoys on each spreader, it has three spreaders so you can put up to a dozen on it. It has a stake, just like a mojo duck stake, with a bungee attached to a regular nylon cord. No problems whatsoever for me. This is a picture of it, I usually just put 4 on it.

I've only used one once and I don't think it was setup up right. I need something because they haven't been decoying.

homemade, 4 total dekes, one feeder, two hens, one drake. I have a homemade and it works. I have 6 clips on mine about 4ft apart. Can put whatever on them and been using mag deeks. Last Saturday I played with the feeder and really liked it. I will probably add it in the string and take out one of the others. I like the spreader look though. Anyone post or PM me some more info on this? I suck at reading comp so have no idea what was said above. Went to school in Kansas, need pichers!

Well I hate to admit it but I just sucummed/sucame (sp?) to an impulse buy.  Ordered not one but TWO Jerk-A-Spreaders from Cabela's. Convo went something like this: Her: "O.k. I have your 1st item. Next item?" Me: Next item? Aw hell, just give me two of them then... (Visions of 24 decoys moving this weekend in 6mph winds... oops, now look what I done did. Need me a moist towlet.) "Claims" they will be here on the 24th!  Can't freakin wait!   Could be totally awesome or a major cluster. Hoping for the best but preparing for the worst by packing my standard back-up rig.

Just remembered I owed a report on the "Jerk-O-Spreader." Well Saturday was the first time I set it up and as someone somewhere mentioned it would be a good idea to do a dry set-up run before doing it for real. Wish I would have listened to that advice. Fumbled around in the dark for awhile. Didn't help that my headlamp went dim on me either. Those O-clamps are kinda hard to work, the pole is approx 24" and the water I was in was 3' and it was freaking cold out.  The 60' cord was not long enough but lucky I had my other rig with me so I improvised by adding line and exchanging the pole with a brick.  I was set up about 5 minutes before legal and it looked and worked awesome! A slight twitch and I had a dozen decoys dancing. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a cheap way to add movement to their spread. Just need to factor in and additional 10-15 minutes to get properly set up. Looking forward to this last weekend! Oh, when I got home I added the XL swivel clamps from the tackle section at Academy to the 3 spreaders. THAT makes it 10's easier to attach & detach. In addition, I added a swivel to the end of the cord closest to land so I could add my old baitcasting real spooled with spiderwire for additional length if my blind set-up is further away from the waters edge.

Go to Home Depot and buy a 4' post, it is in the fence section and looks like rebar. I have about 5 or 6 of them set up in the slough at the right distance from the blind for different wind conditions, just drop the pole over the post and your ready to go, you can also add a butt up feeder on top of the pole and the jerk string will move it adding even more motion.
I really like the Rig em Right jerk rigs for all the other places I hunt, easier to set up, and a lot longer string.
It's late in the year, but hope this helps next season.

Last year I rigged up a hen at the point closest to the brick that had a swivel attached under the bill so she would dip under water like she was feeding. This year I have used four decoys on the jerk cord.
As to your first ? Sometimes you just gotta jerk it whether you're in public or in private.
