I have a small ding on the crown of my old Savage. Can I polish this out with compound or something. Maybe some Dremel tool attachment?

Post a pic, but doubt it . The crown is one of the most important parts to shooting accurately. It can be taken fixed but a special crown tool with compound is needed. check with midway USA for instructions. I would not touch it with a dremel.

I had the same problem with my favorite deer rifle last year. Had to send it off the have the barrel cut down and re-crowned. I like the shorter barrel and it did not change my accuracy.

I'll second the gunsmith. Messing with the crown will turn a shooter into a turd very quickly. I don't know what the average is, but I believe Elk Castle Shooting Sports in Fort Worth charges about $45 to cut and re-crown the barrel.

Sometimes the crown can be repaired without cutting the barrel.
Let a pro do it. It's well worth the time and money.
I agree with Tin Head, accuracy will be comprimised until it's repaired properly. Good Luck
